Default 928 Factory Shop Manuals from Porsche - UPDATE !!!

Hi Gang,

Talked to our Porsche rep this morning and got some new news concerning the
status of the long time backordered Shop Manuals.

Was told they will be available sometime this quarter... AND the retail
price is now $1200.70 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our cost is now approx $800 !!

I find this totally outrageous, insulting and NOT ACCEPTABLE !!!!

Porsche recouped their initial production costs many, many years ago..
probably in the first 1000 sets, there is no excuse anyone can give me to
justify such an increase.

I told my rep if this turns out to be fact to not even bother sending us the
100+ we have on backorder because I will not sell them at these prices !!!

Like most of us I have always thought the Shop Manuals were way over priced,
even at the price we sell them for at $345 (last known retail is $477). Due
to this we have always sold them at our cost (dealer cost + CC fees etc)
because I felt it was more important for our 928 friends to have them, than
for us to make money off of them.

However, even selling them at our cost of approx. $800 is not acceptable to
me and I will have no part in such a blatant "rip-off" of my fellow 928
owners !!

If this truly turns out to be fact, 928 Specialists will not be filling our
current backorders and will no longer sell the Factory Shop Manuals. Sorry,
but I could not get up every morning and look in the mirror if I did this.

If this does indeed turn out to be the fact, I implore everyone to boycott
these manuals and let them sit on the shelves and ROT !!

Besides, I have heard rumors of a mythical creature called a "Deerslayer"
that has a better alternative, and I would recommend that you seek out this
mythical beast. As I hint I think this creature puts markings on things,
that seem to look like the initials "JM".

Sorry for the crappy news, I truly hope it turns out to be wrong, but I am
doubtful.

Have a great 928 weekend (hope I didn't put a cloud on it),

just out of curiosity, what is the legality of putting the manuals on CD, then selling them? Then, is it any worse to print a paper-version of the CD manual and sell it?

It's not legal, but I doubt anyone is going to care now.

Thanks for the info DR. I have two friends that really want a set, but not for $1200 or even $800.

I just bought a set of the 1978-1995 in the original Porsche box for $450 on ebay. Just thought I would share in case anybody is curious as to a going rate for used ones on ebay. I've been watching for a set since September and this was the first I found so they don't come often.

It's rediculous that a cult of 928 owners who's ambition it is to keep these cars alive would be subject to that price!

I know the CD's aren't legal, but we're going to see more or more of them now. I could do a lot to my care with $1200.

Perhaps Porsche is intentionally inflating the price of the manuals to make it more "worth their while" to chase the folks who are selling the CDs: inflating their damages.

It wouldn't surprise me.

I bet you see a few more older manuals heading to the copy machine at that price!

Now wait for the $200.00 T-belt in a few years!!

Isn't price gauging a crime?
To sell something that has a production cost of $30 for $1200 might just be considered gauging.
Especially if you consider that the desperate buyer already bought the car for $60,000 and up to begin with.
I just hope somebody (maybe out of another country) fires up a double sided laser printer and floods ebay with a couple of thousand manuals.
Cheers,
Sab.

From what I've heard, Porsche's legal tactics are of the We-are-much-bigger-than-you-and-can-bankrupt-you-in-legal-costs-regardless-of-the-validity-of-our-claims variety.

Porsche has an interesting track record in coming down hard on people registering domain names that include the term "Porsche". I believe the name "Rennlist" is a result of this track record, or at least rumors of if.

well, i had asked the question of making paper manuals from the CD because i do alot of computer work for a printing company, and have racked up about $125 worth of money they owe me. I told them maybe i'll just have them print me some large PDF documents instead, and they said that was fine...

Does anyone know if all the CD-manuals are the same scan quality? I know of the guy on this board who took the time to make the documents more searchable, but are his page-scans better than all the other ones in ebay?

Backwoods of PA i hear?

1200 bucks(no pun to the Deerslayer hahah) ...its truley laughabale! Lets see how long this little message takes to filter across to ebay prices.

mspiegle, do a search under this. That person is probably the most reputable to get the CD.
