Horns on an early S4
 

'87 S4 auto

While taking the front apart I noticed that I appear to have early model horns on my car. As it such an early S4 I thought they were probably correct, but after taking a closer look at pictures of other cars I think a previous owner engaged in some "weird DIY".

Below is Ed Scherer's picture of an '90 S4, showing the bracket and way the horns are attached:

However this is what I found on my car:

What I think happened is that the outer bolt snapped off from the bracket...…

…..And they used the support of the S4 horns to attach a pair of older style horns to the bracket:

But now what? Shall I clean-up and leave the current set-up? Or try to restore the bracket and get a pair of correct horns?

Any thoughts would be appreciated…..!

Maybe make a 90 degree bracket(v a straight one) that will bolt thru the top(in a new hole) beside where the broken mounting tab is located.

Hard core would be get a new bracket assembly and replace it, but then you disturb the coating on the frame and deal with re-coating it.

IMHO Clean it up and leave it the way it is reworked,
this is a stronger mounting point as you have seen the early mount was prone to fatigue,
and thus the outer stud snaps off.
I have seen this on more than a few cars.
Plus you got the early horns ,
if possible tilt the open ends down so water wont fill them
Beyond this no one will ever see these unless they take the fender liner and block off plate out

Hi Dave, thanks for thinking along! I thought about that but that will mean another hole in the bracket and I´m a bit reluctant to do that.

I agree a new bracket would be nicest solution, but having to re-coat the frame is definitely a show-stopper.

Will clean up the bracket, order a new set of supports and 'bend' them slightly to tilt the end of the horns down a bit.

My 87 still had the mount that the earlier car trumpet horns used up at the top of that area...I put in set of trumpets, like em better.

I didn't see that mount, will have a look later. I believe that mount is located on the side wall of the car, with the horns facing sideways?

Correct.

A much better mount, that doesn't fatigue.

My S4 horns died, but I used this $9 replacement from Amazon (Harbor Freight also carries it):
