Running after shut off
Good morning all;
Asking for assistance with an odd problem. Was working on window adjustment with my 1985 recently. After shut of (and key removal) car continued to run (not dieseling). I removed the rear defroster relay/fuse respectively with situation unchanged. Replaced ignition switch - still the same. Pull fuel pump fuse until car dies, disconnect battery strap, upon reconnect - dash lights up independent of cylinder lock position/key in or out of ignition. At this point, I am thinking ignition lock (although key switch positions seem to act appropriately) or perhaps alternator (although no other electrical issues). Suggestions? Tests? Many thanks for all assistance.

It sure sounds like a classic ignition switch problem. Did you replace with a new one? Sometimes new parts are bad too.

pull the rear window defroster relay as with it engaged it will let the engine continue to run with the key removed .
NOTE you might not be removing the correct relay
Please post a picture of the CE panel and the relay you removed

Stan - question - why would the rear window defroster have this affect? Is it in series with the ignition?

Thanks for the replies. I replaced with new OE ignition switch and did remove the rear defroster relay (double relay bottom left of CE panel) and fuse. Any other possibilities? Again, trying to rule out alternator/ignition lock. Many thanks.

There are cheap knock offs out there, does your new one have a nice little yellow part number sticker on it? If not, it's the bad one.

It does indeed have a little yellow sticker. I trust I have ruled out the ignition switch and rear defroster as causes. Any other possibilities?

What was the last thing you fixed?
please add more detail about how this failure started?
when was the last time the car operated properly?

As indicated in my first post, I was working on the driver's side window adjustment. Car ran fine the entire time I was working (had engine running during window adjustment) and previously. Not certain why the continued request to post a pic of the rear defroster (double) relay? I do know where the relay is located as per my previous post. Again, thanks for any suggestions/possibilities.

I thought I was fairly specific about working on window adjustment immediately before the fault. I am also positive the defroster relay is correctly installed. I did ask in my first post whether the collective could hazard a thought about ignition lock or alternator as a cause. Perhaps I could ask a pointed question in the hope of narrowing the issue, “Has anyone experienced run on due to faulty alternator or any other wiring feed than the rear defroster?”
As I thought would be apparent from my posts, I am aware this issue is predominantly caused by ignition switch/rear defroster relays issues. These have been addressed and determined not to be the cause (unless of course an OE ignition switch is bad out of the box causing exactly the same fault that previously was present).
In any event, thanks for all responses.
