Default Auto Classics: I wish I'd kept my...Porsche 928

Enjoyed this recent piece by a former owner. I'm still trying to imagine a "Spanish beach donkey". If you like Alice Cooper - prepare to be disappointed.

Interesting read, but what is up with the whole re-badged Audi concurrence? And then this line?

"Servicing commanded Porsche prices – but as a canny Scot, I saved a few quid in the Audi parts department"

Someone please enlighten me. What Audi parts crossover with the 928 and from which Audi? I mean beside generic Bosch stuff, relays etc, is there anything designed by Audi that Porsche sourced for the 928 instead of designing in-house?

At first I thought Alice Cooper was mixing up the history with the 924 Audi connection. Then the reference to visiting the Audi dealer for parts puzzled me, too. Maybe oil filters or accessory belts that are the same and cheaper at the Audi shop. But his description of his 928 when he got it sounds like he'd have to go well beyond Audi shop for parts.

I like that link to the 928 tv commercials near the bottom. There's a segment in the middle with the veddy proper Brit gentleman driving his new 928 home to the manor, and the butler asks: "shall I have the chauffeur put it in the garage?" and the somewhat stuffy gent says; "Fire the chauffeur". Classic.

FWIW that car that was used in the Fire the Chauffeur commercial had a ATF fire out in CA about 5 years ago,
its parts have been spread across the USA

I wonder if Alice Cooper was confusing 928 with the 944, built at the Audi factory at Neckarsulm (though some S2 were built at Stuttgart)?

Ironically, Porsche used an Audi 100 coupé as a test mule to disguise the 928 during development. It would be accurate to describe those cars as 928s disguised as Audi’s!
