Introducing myself and 1984 928 S
Good afternoon everyone.
thought it would be a good idea to browse the forums and pick the brains of fellow enthusiasts on a 1984 Porsche 928 S , manual. The car belongs to my grandmother, and was almost always well maintained. (39,000 miles to the date now). Since my grandfather passed in 2015, the car really has sat under a cover in her garage. It’s taken out to be filled up, fluids changed, inspected every year. Last year it was not. I got her approval and put a new battery in today (It did not start this spring) After a couple attempts it did start up and ran. Noticed the fuel gauge and battery gauge were very jittery. Dash Lights were a little dim, and when RPMs increased, lights on dash were okay . Voltmeter on the dash was hovering around 12 or so but the car died a few times and would idle under 12V. To my knowledge, and what I could see, the terminals and ground cable were okay, no Green fuzzy stuff anywhere . I did not have my DMM with me to check actual outputs, that’ll be my next step. It does have a few bulbs out that I plan to check and replace as needed.
I did read along the new member posts and will do some researching into what additional ground cables to check and clean. The jittery gauges on the dash lead me to believe there is a loose or corroded connection somewhere. Just wanted to introduce myself and shed a little insight on the beginning of my relationship with this car!
thanks,
jacob

Welcome. You've come to the right place.
The grounds that need to be cleaned (all of them) are listed in the "New Visitor" sticky,
It's also possible that the connections for the instrument cluster are in need of cleaning. It's a bit involved, you have to pull the entire pod off, but it's not all that hard.
Dwayne's Garage has some very good writeups on how to do this. Dwayne's is linked in the New Visitor sticky.

Nice!
Running is goood.
Electrical...well, it works..but. What you see isnt abnormal, but its old. So...
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...questions.html
Has a TON if info, the cleaning of all ground points, pod/cluster connections, CE panel, will likely get 95% of the issues out of the way, and things will work like new.
Old window switches, or corroded window motor plugs..will pop up as well, but all are fairly easy to work with.
Take it one repair at a time.

Hi Jacob and welcome! Great looking car. And an '84! The best year of the 928. Our cars may be identical. What color is yours? Mine is Zinc metallic and has the same platinum flat disc (manhole cover) wheels. What color is you interior?
Like Joe suggested, definitely clean all the grounds. Plus do a search here for "top end refresh". There are a lot of things on our motors that after 30 years need replacing regardless of if the car was regularly driven. Make sure you looking to replacing all of the flammable fluid lines (fuel, power steering) at some point soon. Too many unfortunate engine fires are caused by leaks due to old rubber. Don't go by looks, if you don't know the history of the fuel line, replace it.
Good luck!

Wow, what a beautiful 928 and a beautiful family story to go with it! Welcome to the 928 Forum, glad you found us! That is about as good as it gets for an 84, a silver 5-speed is tops in my book! My very first 928 was an 84, but it had one of the slushies in it(not that is anything wrong with that, lol), and after that one it was 928 5-speeds only for me!
Concerning your issues it sounds like you are off to a good start with a new battery. Follow up with a thorough cleaning of all the fuses etc. and most if, if not all of your glitches could be gone. Any left will be much easier to trace down and resolve. We have a handy Fuse/Relay Charts for all year models on our website http://www.928gt.com , once there look on the left menu about 7 links down for "928 Fuse/Relay Charts", open that folder and select 83-84 for the exact charts for your 928.
Once again welcome and let us know if there is anyway we can assist you in continuing the great care of your 928!
All the best,
Dave

I’m new to forum posting and I’m not 100% sure with the individual replies. The interior is a maroon-ish / burgundy.
Great I will check out that fuse and relay link, thank you! I plan to replace the Battery ground strap with the Waytek cable which seems to be a common repair, just for safe measures. I am going to print out the ground point locations and one by one go through them all to check and clean. Trying to make a list of all my lighting bulbs that are out on the exterior to check and repair as well! It’s nice to have this as a project and not having to worry about fixing it , or I won’t have a ride to work in the morning!

You should drop what you are doing and immediately go purchase a Lotto Ticket, nothing wrong with winning the Jackpot TWICE in one day..:-)
In other words, Bob's 928 knowledge is second to none, and his attention to "928 detail" is way above par! Bob, that is a very gracious offer, kudos to you sir!
Happy Tuesday,
Dave

thanks! Im living and working in NH , around the Portsmouth/Dover area, and for whatever I have for time working on the car will be in Massachusetts. (I don’t have suitable workspace or a garage at my house as of now unfortunately)
