Default Switch health?

I have a 87 s4. The interior is in great shape but I noticed the center console buttons can be a little sticky. As in the get stuck down or a re a little hard to depress, not surface tackiness.

how do you guys keep these conditioned , healthy?

They're probably getting interference from the center console slightly warping and making contact with them.

Removing a little material is the usual fix for them.

Yep, 200 should be fine enough. Either that or you can trim it with a razor blade.
