It was fuel pump failure due to vapor lock from excessive heat driving through desert at 116 degrees for hours. Extended Warranty covered it. Weird thing is Audi has a service builitn for this and now adds a breather tube to prevent vapor lock in future.

Lesson here for folks who are thinking of dumping the in-tank pump in their 928’s.
