Rear joints dust boot versions?
According to the workshop manual 1981 cars should have bolted drive-shafts on both wheelside and gearboxside.
Mine is from 1981 VIN 92ZBS841371 but have the drive shaft which has a welded joint on the outside(wheel) and bolted at the gearboxside.
In the workshop manual it says there are different boots used from 82 and onwards, beacuse then there was a change to the later shaft.(only bolted on the gearbox side)
So when ordering new boots for my -81, would that tell the dealer that i need the old version and I end up with the wrong boot?
Anyone know if the facts in the workshop manual are wrong on this, or are my car produced late enough to have the never drive shafts even if it is classified as a 1981??
Thanks/Peter

A quick check of the PET shows the double bolt style went through '81, confirming your info.
However, you've hit on the practice of Porsche to not cleanly break model years. No point in letting good parts go to waste, or to not start the next version when the old ones run out.
Get the later boot kit version for the outside 928 442 924 00 and the older one for the inside 928 332 922 01.

That sounds like a good idea, want to be as sure as possible since I'm in Europe and order from the big three in the US.
If it's wrong, changing is not too easy.
(not to mention the time loss)

Maybe someone relpaced the shafts to the new ones during it's past 23 years of life.
Sounds like you need the new style.
Why don't you just compare to the workshop manual pictures or post a picture here to make sure?

Hi John,
just back in from the garage, the inner boots defintely have the lip described in the workshopmanual on page 42-23.
So I will buy the never version for both inside and outside.
(928 442 924 00)
Will disassemble the outer joints tomorrow and will know for sure if the inner and outer boots looks the same on the inside.
