S4 passenger cam gear removal
I need to replace hall sensor-crumbled connector (not going to replace plug on it)
i am in the middle of a timing belt job.
Belt is off-locked and marked at 45.
can anyone tell me the specifics of removing the gear and the plate behind it that the hall is mounted to?

The hall sensor can be replaced without removing the cam gear. It has two? 4mm allen bolts holding it to the back plate behind the gear. Very hard to reach. Search in 928 for Hall sensor replacement.

You dont have to remove the cam gear to replace the hall sensor. Its mounted to the back of the cam gear housing and is behind a small cover held on with two small allen screws.

Sean has recommended replacing the 4mm allen bolts with a std hex head. To get it out, I recall loosening the pax motor mount bolt, jacking the pax side of the engine(or maybe i used a come-along to pull it left?), for some gap to work. You will need a 4mm ball-head long allen wrench or driver. The bolts tend to be frozen, so make sure the bit is set well in the bolt, and give it a rap with a hammer before you try to unscrew it.

If you are doing your belt job this is the perfect time to get the hall sensor easy. Which you already know becaue you are asking about it.
17mm socket on a ratchet and a 30mm wrench to counter hold the cam. Pull out the bolt, slide off the gear (taking care to see exactly where the gear is in relation to the 3x holes for the distributor rotor, unless you plan on using the 32vR tool for timing the cams), slide off the golden cover, slide off the triangle piece (sometimes takes some effort but please do not use much). Once those are out of the way remove the 3 10mm bolts holding the backing plate off and you can get the sensor easy.

I replaced mine during an intake refresh, without removing the gear. I was cavalier about those two 4mm bolts and stripped one. I had to Dremel a slot in a pair of vice grips, at right angles to the regular teeth. With the vice grips on the bolt head vertically (no room to have them in normal position), the new "teeth" set in hard, I used another pair to turn them. Then I dropped the other one, never to be seen again. Got lucky and found two replacements in my bicycle tool box.
It took time and patience to pick the busted bits of the sensor plug out of the socket.
