Default 85/6 bearing driveline squall ?

Guys, am servicing an automatic car that has some worsening bearing noise. Underneath while idling, noise sounds loudest near rear coupler. Sounded like one of the pair rear tc bearings.

I now have tt out and tc bearing cover also out ready to disassemble.

not feeling much in the way of roughness from tc bearings, but will replace anyway this aft.

Didn't plan to redo tt brgs, but may. The drive shaft spins smooth and free, little noise, but maybe spins too freely, little resistance, brgs probably dry and original...i think 130k miles.

My concern is reassembling and maybe not solving the original noise.

Question, has anybody followed this path and diagnosed instead that primary pump brgs were the real root cause? At a crossroads here. It's a lot of work to reassemble, but very risky to disassemble further....any thoughts from somebody who has faced this would be appreciated!

Chris if the shaft is spinning freely then the bearings are probably done dryed out,
Best to swap in new bearings.

Also look for a sliding damper if its been installed,
if so it would be wise to pin it ,
drill a hole on either side of the damper support then put in one screw this will keep it from sliding back and forth

Also swap out the TC bearings.
I have not heard nor done the primary pump bearings being replaced

Ok, thanks Stan, will follow that course and then reassemble and hope for the best. I do feel a catch in the tc brgs, but not as bad as expected. I have a set of new tc bearings left from the 84 red Stan Shaw project. Aborted the tranny repairs on that one and transplanted an 89 s4 auto box along with a tc and tc cover to match leaving brgs alone.

Have three SK 6006 2Z JEM bearings on order for tt, per Dwayne's TT tutorial, probably will only have 2 carriers being automatic, so may have a spare brgs. $20 each, cheap! Will pin the heavy damper somehow, maybe with a big set screw. Will assume carriers and little inserts are going to be fully reusable at this stage, if not, will retrench and go with the superbearings alternative which I know is superior.

Thanks for input. Am encouraged that youve not heard tell of primary pump brgs failure. If anybody else has, though, please weigh in!

the idea i had with pinning was to put a screw into the tube thus the rubber doughnut of the damper will rest on it then the opposite end also gets a pin to prevent it from sliding,
I would not try to push a screw into the rubber support of the damper

Send the TT to Constantine and have him rebuild it with his bearings. It's not worth having to do this job twice. He eliminates the rear damper because of the size and weight of the Super Bearings.

OK, progress.

The spacer rattling around between the two TC bearings is nothing more than an installation aid.
It had worn and was rattling.
With an alternate sequence of reassembly, and using the 2 inch X 6 inch pipe w/ cap as a press aid, I was able to omit the spacer.

The bearings are both captive, the assembly is sound and I'm a happy camper.

Dwayne mounted the bearings into the cover, then pressed the whole apparatus onto the shaft.

I mounted the backmost bearing onto the shaft, lined up the cover, then pressed the frontmost bearing onto the shaft, while guiding the cover onto the outside surfaces of both bearings simultaneously.
Then you install the last, frontmost, snapring.

Perfect. There are inner snap rings on the shaft that hold the bearings in place.
