Jim Bailey and others,
How hard would it be (Cost and time), to reproduce the single turbo setup I currently have installed and working (40K miles) on my 16V? If anyone is interested in such a project, let me know. Reproducing what has been already done sounds simple enough.

Silver ...good question , what did it cost to put it on originally ? I also have some concerns about all the additional heat both under the hood and on the exhaust valves / heads . Additionally , many more people seem to have a higher comfort level bolting parts on top of their engine instead of working under the car removing exhaust manifolds , cutting and welding exhaust etc. But you have an excellent point , Porsche when they want boost uses turbos .......the Cayenne twin turbo as I recall is designed so that about 80 % of the water pump output flows directly to the cylinder heads FIRST ....

FWIW I told the the guy that built your system that there may be a market for it now. I asked him would he want to make some. He just looked at me, laughed and shook his head no.
If you plan to try to make a repo I would say set aside 1500hrs and $10k.

Looks like you are on the path to a nice 600 rwhp pull. Any idea how many hours or minutes was the engine actually at 18 psi boost?

If 18 psi is 6000 rpm, then 9 psi is at maybe 3500 rpm or so. When I looked at some data for a recent track event, out of 20 minute session, only 3% of the time was at 5500 rpm or higher...any thoughts on of the 3000 miles, how many of those miles or minutes was at max boost? What are the testing plans?

I have used LGS of lubbok tx composites before with good success on some high output 'merican iron with good success, and it appears that sterlings copper ones are working out ok. So far so good.

See ya in later in the year, maybe at an open road race. A few 200 mph 928's will sure turn some heads...

The estimated cost was between 9K and 15K @1985, but I have not been able to get an exact figure of what the exact cost was. To my knowledge, it is and was the only 928 that BAE turboed. I cant believe that 1500 Hrs and 10K was invested in the cost to develop it. Heat has not been an issue. Yet! Again if someone(Big Three) wanted to build a reproduction of it, I would be glad to loan my car out. It is a clean setup and runs great. IT would give people some more options for the 16V 928.

Marc try downshifting and /or a higher redline because if you shift at 5500 your 3% becomes 0 % ......now what was the point ? Oh right, reliability of the supercharger .....would not that same question , spot light , be equally valid when directed toward a stroker ? In a 20 minute track "event" you were above 5,500 RPM for 36 seconds .............Tell me again about the "million miles" on the stroker engines " ...how many of those street miles were above 5,500 rpm ??

While we are on the subject of turbo 928 engines, I just read in "Excellence was Expected" that the factory built a twin turbo 928 motor for offshore racing boats (Jacky Ickx) that produced max power of 750 bhp @ 6300 rpm and 643 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm. 15psi with 8.0:1 compression ratio. It was briefly considered by Kremer as the engine for their 962C race car. Sounds cool!

By the way, all my Callaway turbo parts are stored in plastic bins, but John K. would be the Callaway turbo expert.

The liability is an issue that would need to be addressed by the seller....10,00 hours is about right for doing it right....I would like to see it someday.

The twin boosted 928 was an interesting engine...actually a work or art. I know a local that was hired by Kramer to invetigate the 928 in 962 option and in fact, I believe a 928 engine is going into a 962 locally

Jim. My experience is that whenever I try to fix something up, it bites me. I think what you're doing is great, and for a great cause. BUT, don't try to overpolish a turd. Hahaha.

On the turbo: I'm game to help copy that setup!

Jim Bailey makes some excellent points, I agree with them all.

Tim, Sno et Al ... isn't it cool how for years horsepower came our way in tiny, $30k at-a-time trickles ... yet with a small amount of thought and work, we're talking about 600bhp? THANK YOU for kicking butt and getting boost where it belongs, in the hands of the average Joe. I'm going there very soon ....

On head gaskets ... who cares? So, you buy a couple at 180 bucks, pop them in and off you go .... Personally I'd consider those a basic, but again, with no problems, who cares ....
