Voltage Regulator Wiring Question

Voltage Regulator Wiring Question
Hi all, replacing the VR on our 1983 928S, and the replacement unit came with a blue and yellow wire. The original only seemed to have a blue wire. Unsure as to where to connect the blue. Pic attached.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

It looks like you have a Paris Rhône alternator the PR regulators have blue and yellow wires and the wires will plug into the pins adjacent to the mounting area of the regulator if your not sure then you might be better off removing the alternator and working on it on a bench

Thank you very much for the reply. I did notice the old VR said Paris Rhone on the top. Will this replacement VR be compatible then? Thanks again, appreciate the help very much!

I am not sure what regulator you have but if you get the 20 dollar replacement you may find the alternator will not operate properly it could start overcharging
I just swapped in a new regulator on my PR alt and it has been working good and it’s charging at 14.2 if your charge goes over14.5 say to 15.2 v then you probably will need a new regulator

This is the unit. Not sure of the quality of HUCO. Supposed to be OEM quality of course, but who knows. It listed at $60 or so, but I didn't pay that much. Appreciate the tip though, and if we get it properly connected, will keep an eye on over-charging! Thanks again.

make sure your working with the battery disconnected ,
put some heatshrink on the connector ends,
or swap over the plastics from the old unit

We were considering just swapping the "plastics" as you suggest - looks like they're riveted in though. I believe it may be as simple as one to negative (gound) and one to positive (battery), so that's where we'll proceed next. Thanks for all the advice and help!

nope their should be 2 distinct pins that your new part connects too.
please post pictures of your actual parts IE the regulator you removed and the new part .
NOTE their are different alternators this some different connections,
the correct alternator for the 928 should have 2 pins to connect the regulator,
they will be easily seen

Ok, thanks. I will try to get a pic of the old one, when I get back over there. New one is pic posted above. They look essentially the same, except the old one only had one (blue) wire. Thanks again for all the input.

if your old regulator only has one blue wire then the alternator might not be the correct part for the 928,
or its a different design .
Iin that case you will need to properly match up the regulator.
NOTE since this is now sounding like mixed up parts you would be well advised to take the alternator to a rebuild shop and see if they can figure out whats going on.
NOTE trying to make repairs when the parts dont match up could spell disaster for the system.

Thank you, good advice, and I think you're absolutely correct. It's a very original 45k mile car, but who knows whats happened over the last 35 years. I am inclined to source a complete OEM alternator, at this point, so we know its proper and correct. Thank you again for all the input!

Probably a dumb question (that's my specialty!) but is Bosch only OEM, or were some cars fitted with Paris Rhone from the factory? I thought I recalled reading that at one time. Thanks in advance!

PR was used as well as the Bosch,
I dont know what the determining factor was

Ok, thank you! I believe I will search for a PR unit (since that seems to be what's in there, based on the V-regulator), so everything will bolt up nicely. Thanks again for all the input, much appreciated!
