Hehe.
Did happy hour start already?

Who was it that got all worked up because he actually thought the “Rogerbox” was an aftermarket performance product that we were unfairly promoting?

Short shifter? It barely moves. Why not just get a Rogerbox at that point.

If you hairy chested manual guys really love your sticks, then this is mod you need to develop for the 928.

So to get a Rogerbox to go from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 at WOT, you go 2-3-2-3-D?

Once upon a time, Porsche produced two 928s, one with a 5-speed, and one with a Rogerbox. They measured them, and found the Rogerbox was too heavy and too slow.

So they made the engine bigger, and gave the Rogerbox another gear. But it was still too heavy and too slow.

So they tried again. But it was still too heavy and too slow

And again, but still:

And- well, you know.

So finally, in 1989, they stopped publishing performance specs for Rogerbox 928s altogether, because Dentist's wives don't read the performance specs anyway.

Some of us prefer to stir the pudding basins. I didn't own an auto from 92 until I got my Cayenne about three years ago. I would have gotten a 6 speed Cayenne if they were available (there are a very few out there, but no turbos).

My work truck is a semi truck. Not quite as shown in that video.

While that is impressive, there's not a whole lot of need for that many gears, not even today.

I run a 10 speed in my big truck, which is very typical for company trucks. Same 'dog leg" 5 speed pattern as the 928, with a splitter for high & low (1-5 low range, split to high, 6-10 high range).
13 speeds have an 'overdrive' switch that allows splits for each gear in high range, but only use 4 of the 5 in high range (1st isn't used). There are 15, 18 and 20 speeds out there, but those are not too common and used for special stuff, like very heavy haul.

To a large degree, the splitter does the same thing as the twin or triple stick, but just uses electrics or air solenoids to make the shifts in the auxiliary boxes.

Big trucks need more gears because the operating range of RPMs is a lot smaller. Old school was 1500 to 2100. New runs 1100 to 1600.

Having a range from 1000 to 6000 means five gears is plenty.

Happy Friday, everybody!

I get a 2 hour run in the 928 early tomorrow down to the DZ to jump.

I know there's lots of folks heading to the Smokies for SITM.
