I took a bit of flack over on the Pelican BBS for saying the same thing as Clarkson: that the 911's engine placement is an engineering mistake that - due to customer demand - Porsche has had to spend decades trying to correct. Every time Porsche has been given a free hand, they've gone with either the 924/944/928 layout of a front engine and rear trans, or mid-engine (914, 986).
I agree (of course) that the 928 is the curiously unsung supercar, doing everything the others do but unappreciated; then again, it's also the best bang/buck on the supercar market and I'm hoping people don't wake up until I've found mine!
