The driver's side mirror on my red '87 came loose; it was swiveling loosely on the base. Per Greg Nichols' web site, I followed the procedure of removing the bolt attaching the mirror base to the door, and attempted to get enough slack in the wiring to get a pair of needle nose pliers in there to tighten the hollow threaded bolt.
Unfortunately, I was unable to get but 1" of slack in the wiring so I pulled the door panel. I had to put a new door stay in anyway, so I was able to fix two things with the door panel off. I was able to push about 6" of wiring through the door to give me plenty of room to work on the mirror. I tried unsuccessfully several times with needle nose pliers to get the hollow bolt back in. I then pulled the hollow bolt out and noticed the threading was stripped about 3/8" from the bottom. Repeated swiveling of the mirror to remove/install the mirror bra and during washing/waxing the car may have caused the threading to strip. Has anybody else ever experienced this problem?
Fortunately I was able to fix the problem by removing the washer at the top of the spring to allow the remaining threading on the hollow bolt to catch the mirror threading. Problem solved.

FUnny you should mention it as I am having that problem right now. My bolt was/is almost as you described. I am going to try your quick fix and see how it goes. Great Post!
