My introduction to Rennlist and RMB question

I believe the exhaust is in fact different for '86.5 as opposed to the "standard" 85-86. I can't say from looking at it though, because my '86.5 did not come with a stock exhaust, but I do believe that is the case....

86.5 cars have a dual exhaust similar to the 87+ cars. Only that it exits from the side instead of out back on the car.
You cannot fit a RMB onto the car and if you want to change the exhaust you need to go custom or adapt a 86.5+ system to your car. The floor pans are the same, you just need to fit the exhaust hangers.
All later dual exhaust mid mufflers are the same, you just need to change the rear muffler/ RMB to fit your bumper cover if you go down this route.
One major thing you need to do now is a real top end refresh. Also doesn't hurt to replace the cam chain tensioners with later ones and replace the pads while you're in there.
I went in deep with 928s when I was 15. You're in good company and welcome to Rennlist

I can't offer any information on the question you have posed, but I feel compelled to let you know that I sincerely admire
your passion and new appreciation for your treasure. not sure most people your age understand what its all about and
trying to explain to someone the desire to take on a project of a rolling piece of art is, most times, useless.
so kudos, congrats, and a big hats off to you. best of luck, and enjoy the journey.
