Removing tail pipe tip bolts
While working under car today, I got the idea it would be nice to repaint the black exhaust tips, just to tidy them up. My MY91 has the double tips.
They're held on by a small bolt. I could turn the bolt but it never seemed to back out of the nut. In the end I just grabbed each tip and could rotate and pull it off. Examining each one I could see that the bolt is held by a square nut in a square recess, and each nut was horribly rusted/welded on to the bolt by heat, and had rounded off enough to turn in the recess!
So how I'm wondering what's the best way of releasing those bolts so that I can replace with new parts after painting the tips. As the bolt heads haven't backed out, it looks tricky to dremel them off.

cut the bolt off with a dremel if turning loose with a wrench wont work.
Paint the tips your favorite high heat caliper paint.
then get some RED hi heat RTV and put a few beads inside the tip and slide them onto the muffler let it cure this should hold them on for good.
NOTE clean the muffler tip before installing the tip covers

I would not use Hi temp rtv .Because you will not get them to sitt nice on the pipes and look square either weld some 4/5 nn nuts on them your self your take them to your friendly welder. Because you can adjust the lining up of the tips with the threds .

Not even sure the screw does much to positively locate the tip. The dimples at various points seem to make it a push fit. Now the bolt is turning, with tip on there’s just a very slight rocking movement if I grab it and try to move up and down - takes some force.
Thanks for tip on high heat paint. I think engine enamel would work too.

I have done what I suggested it works great,
and you can get the pipes off if need be,
you would never know that the tips were siliconed onto the muffler ,
and they can be aligned any way you want them

Thanks Stan, I was thrown by your comment that the RTV would “hold them on for good”!
I got the old bolt and nut out by grinding off the head, and now plan to repaint the tips. I’ll see if a new square nut works, if not I’ll use your red RTV tip.

Sorry for the confusion what i meant was that the tips wont fall off if you use the RTV unless you assist them in removal, but they will come off
