The 84 has most of the interior wiring burned up or cut up from the look of it, so it's gonna be evern worse to fix eventually.
Fortualately that interior light wire seemed to just run from the CE to a connector in the passengers side B pillar and that was the extent of the damage. I will be inspecting further as the rest of the interior panels come out though.

Cleaned up some more of the interior wiring tonight before it got too dark. It still doesn't look great, but it's better than the half peeling off electrical tape. The crimp connectors shouldn't come off over time like the tape.
It looks like the damage stops at the connector that goes up the B pillar to the dome light and sunroof, but I'll be checking wiring as I pull out interior panels still.
This is the broken domelight that had the lamp cord to it. I think I can glue the piece that broke off the right side back on and save it.

See this: http://928-electrics.com/Docs1/Porsc...WDP%20Only.pdf It really applies mainly to 87+vehicles but almost everything is applicable to an '86 also

Thanks. I think I might have seen part of that document the other day, and it definitely did help explain how to read the wiring diagrams.

Looking at that rats nest you have there, I'd suggest you purchase some used harnesses from 928 International and just replace them w/ clean wiring.
I went through the same thing a few years back, a single wire would change color and gauge three times before getting to its destination.
Had large bundles of tape under the dash and all along the side like yours, it took less time to replace it all w/ used than repair.
I did Rear, under dash and under hood, everything works now as it should and looks stock and clean, because now it is
Went back and looked up my old tread, start at post 90 for my wiring mess and replacement.
I should continue it now w/ the heater core /HVAC rebuild and new Robert Budd interior finally going in

Something else to consider, you will never get the bundle of wires back to the same thinness as the factory's harness and although you may be good at connections and wire repairs nothing beats a continuous strand of wire point to point.
The above was a factor in my decision to just replace it when I was faced with the wiring rats nest, I'ts now one of the things I look for when buying any used car, cut up wiring.
Stay with it and keep us posted,
Dave

Went through the rest of this section of the harness and made sure there were no other exposed wires, and then put some split loom on it to make it neater for now. It does in fact appear that the wire that got hot and melted was for the front dome light, so that should be the whole run of that wire gone over. I will continue checking wiring as I go though.
Still not perfect, but looks a lot better than it did to begin with in my opinion. Still need to get some smaller split loom for the dome light wiring.
I'm guessing those two white connectors are for the hatch release switch that goes here? Not sure what that other connector is for though. Maybe some option this car didn't have?

this is good practice , I would find a donor car and get used harnesses to replace the ones your messing with,
swap out the trash VDO ceiling lamps for the VW versions .
Also get another CE panel find the part number and post it .

Meant to ask about these wires coming off the ecu and ezk connectors too. Looks like both are disconnected and were taped to the rest of the harness. I think I've seen another picture of them being disconnected on another car. Not sure what they're for though.

Those are stock and should be left discoed,
The one on the EZF is for low octane use (in case 93 is not available) and will retard the spark at WOT
The one on the LH will enrich the fuel, at WOT, also to prevent Knock,

So while doing my timing belt job I found corrosion on the front part of the engine harness (from 14 pin to alternator & starter). Not having luck finding just the front part of that harness. Can I get one for a reasonable price somewhere or am I going to be remaking this?
14 pin end.
Corrosion on these (temp?) sensors.
Yanked out. Surprisingly not as difficult as I thought.
Most of the corrosion seems to be limited to this area.
