I carry a Halon extinguisher...no mess but it will kill you if you don't get out of the car. I hate mess and I like my car. About $100 or less. Got mine for $50 off eBay.

Gee Mark, If you didn't have a picture of a fire extinguisher in your second picture I would have guessed somebody has a serious drug problem
Hope everything works out ok. Keep us posted.

Sorry to hear and see about your misfortune. A common problem that might have led to this happening is a clogged drain above the fuse panel that is supose to drain out any water that comes into the fresh air blower area at the base of the windshield. When this drain gets plugged it traps water above the fuse panel and eventually in leaks dripping on top of it.

You guys have any good used replacement fuse/relay panels for the 85 EURO? (Of course - we're gonna "retail" the insurance estimate!)

I was pleased to find a vast improvement in the fuse panel of my 89 over the 81; for those who don't know, they changed to the newer style plug-ins.

You know, all this talk of fire got me wondering (and a little paranoid)... the other day while driving back from Orlando (a little over an hour away) I noticed that the phone I put next to the shifter was warm. Then I touched the window switches and the sunroof switch and they were rather hot to the touch. There was a traffic jam in Orlando so I was stop-n-go for quite a long time. However, I've never experienced this before. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts?

Drifting
Mark - Bad luck, and well done catching it in time.
PbFoot - I have noticed one part of my electrics that gets noticeably warm - the air con button.
There's also an article in this months GT Purely Porsche (a UK magazine) detailing the untimely death of their writer's S2. Probably caused by a power steering leak - I've heard this is a far more common cause of engine bay fires than fuel leaks. The sad pictures show most of the aluminum panels completely vapourized.

Heat
PBfoot: There have been posts about heat entering around the shifter (and hot CDs, not tunes), the heating of the cockpit. I believe the consensus was aerodynamics causes engine/exhaust heat to be drawn in there. IIRC duct tape and/or foam packing were used to reduce but not eliminate the effect. Could be worth a search with "console".

TUK, etal:
A good source for Halon extinguishers for all applications is
http://www.h3r.com/
I got a small red bottle (1 1/2 or 2 lb) for just under $100, shipped via Hazmat. It's a really nice fit behind the driver's seat on the outboard carpeted 'ledge' where my cupholder used to sit. It's inconspicuous, but looks kinda neat with the Porsche Crest on it.
Hopefully it's not too small....I've never had a fire & hope to keep it that way. I'm guessing that if I ever use it, it will be to put out somebody elses fire.
One thing to check before buying Halon through the mail.....my understanding is that shipping the Halon charged units requires a special Hazmat shipping class. Most of the manufacturers have a bulk shipping discount, but it's still expensive. Check the shipping charges before ordering! I saw one company with good prices, but shipping was $28.
In any case, it seems like the cost of a good fire extinguisher is well worth the alternative.

Leadfoot - if your motor mounts have collapsed, this allows the insulating foam pack located between the rear engine and the center console to drop down, allowing hot engine air to enter the console area. It's a common issue.
