Dumb question very dumb
How do I tell if I have a 3speed or 4speed auto? I'm asking because the PO may have upgraded to a 4 speed and I'm not up to speed on these cars enough to know yet.

No such thing as a dumb question. Especially when you ask it.
Look underneath at the transmission oil pans. They will be quite different. The 3spd A22 will be sorta-kinda square. The 4spd A28 will be sorta-kinda rounded rectangle.
A22 3spd automatic oil pan.
A28 4spd automatic oil pan.
Does the car drive? Go for a run and see if you can count shifts.

Oh, didn't quite realize that. Yes, that is an A28 4spd. It should/could be correct for an 84 928S. The A28 debuted in the 928 in 83 or 84, I don't remember specifically.
Between the transmission and the differential housing, there is an adapter plate. On the underside of the adapter plate is a set of numbers. These are the ID for the transmission. You can tell if that transmission is correct for that car, or a different one has been swapped in.
Go to the WSM, Volume 3, Section 30, page 30-0101, and page 30-0102a for further clarification on these numbers.

ROW Cars - 84 and up had 4 speed autos
Go to 928 Specialists website, and under 928 Tips/Links, see Tech/Specs. You can see where your transmission serial number falls.

Well, you already have an answer to your question. So I won't go there.
You also now have ideas on where to look for this sort of info (Owner's Club and 928 Specialists sites, plus the WSM).
And while I no longer subscribe to the idea 'there are no dumb questions', I will repeat a quote I got from a friend a while back:
There's no need to apologize for your ignorance, unless you do nothing to correct it.

Thank's guy's this is a great forum I'm new to 928's although I worked at a Porsche dealer when they were in production. I've worked on 911's for the better part of my life. I have a garage with a lift and work on Porches part time (I'm retired). Spent a lot of time on Pelican, their okay but not as patient and polite. So I'm in the process of having the TT replaced, trans service, pulling the motor for all sorts of refresh etc... You all have been very helpful so far thank you.

Well, maybe we make jokes about 'lawn mowers', but far more poking fun at their attitudes than really meaning it.

I wish I could have found a way to have kept my 83 911SC when I bought my 928. Equally fun cars in very different ways. Heck, I even like old Fiats. Sorry to hijack...

[QUOTE=Wisconsin Joe;14889557]Kinda funny that the 911 types seem to look 'down their noses' at the 928/944 guys, yet the 928 & 944 guys don't seem to care at all.

As you can see I own two 911's. Never liked the 928's until about 6 months ago don't know why. So I bought two. As first I was overwhelmed now that I'm beginning to figure them out they're growing on me.
As far as camp 928 I plan on going driving the 911 sc. No way will the 928 be ready. I'll need a year to make that road ready. The thing is as you get older sometimes I find myself not wanting to take on challenges ( I just finished building a log home and two garages) but, I'm having a good time researching and working on the 928's. Thank God for this board!!!
