Stan,
Back when I was installing Konis on all my cars that needed shocks at the time.(which was every single one of them) The Koni instructions said that each shock was set to full soft right from the factory. Of course, I never believed them and reset almost all the shocks to however I felt that day. But AFAIK, the instructions seemed to be telling the truth. Has something changed at the factory and they are no longer set at full soft?

And like Sean posted, with Konis and new dust boots, the dust boot holes have to be enlarged to fit the Koni shafts. Though, I seem to remember that when using the original dust boots that came on the car (like anybody really has the original ones anymore, although on one car I did) the holes were just fine. I think the manufacturer of the new dust boots have "cheated' us on the new dust boot hole size.

John I have not done any investigation on where the new shocks i just got are set,
I do know that pushing the pistons down and trying to move them is going to take some effort
Best to use a vice to hold the lower mounting point.
Based on other research,
the adjustability option is to return the shocks to an original operating condition ,
NOTE once they have been in service and have shown signs of weakening, this could be an option to replacement.

Follow on question - I have red Boge in the front, and like the idea of adjustables in the rear to give me some room to dial the handling in.

Are these the right ones?
