Default Rear cam cover seals 16V

Hi guys,
I just finished my OPG job on my 84 16V using OEM gasket material. I also noticed some oil leakage at the DS rear cam cover seal so I thought I'd replace both sides. I ordered silicone seals for this purpose. The PS seal is easy from below. The driver's side access is tight and I can just reach it from both above and below. In order to keep the seal in place while manipulating it into position I thought I might use RTV on the cover. I could also probably use thin wires like on the OPG, but this would be slightly more cumbersome due to the tight quarters. Any problem with adhesive on the cover side of the silicone gasket?
Thanks,
Dave

I wouldn't think so. If it was me, I'd use "just a little bit" to hold it in place.

I didn't use anything. I was able to get it on without any.

I think I just put one of the bolts through the cover, hooked the gasket over the bolt and then put it in place.

IIRC, I did it both from above and below. It was one of those "I can reach this one from above, and that one from below" sort of things.
It took some time, but was more tedious than difficult.

Thanks, Joe. I often over think these things. Did you use blue locktight?

Yes. The torque on these is minimal due to the gasket material.

Hello again.
What I did tonight was to use a very thin film of RTV on each cover, then place the silicone gasket in place. I bolted the two covers together finger tight, so they would act as a gasket sandwich while the adhesive cures overnight. I think that will let me position them accurately in tight quarters with my big hands.
Thanks for all the advice.
Dave
