there is actually something called a "referee" where you can go and have something certified. I did not know this...

a bimmer buddy of mine swapped a worked S50 (newer M3 motor) into this '88 325i. He went to the ref, got it certified, and now he can goto any normal smog shop and have his car smogged legally.

also, i bet 1/2 of those mods are totally unnoticeable to most eyes... but that probably isn't the point to your post anyways.

The referee can "approve" engine swaps . A later model newer engine can be installed IF and only IF everything smog related is also updated to the exact equipment used on the newer engine and it meets the emissions of the newer engine model year .You may not install older engines in newer cars . The referee can not "approve" aftermarket modifications ! The manufacturer of aftermarket equipment can apply for a Carb # BUT must prove in a lengthy and expensive test cycle that the new parts do not increase emissions and will function correctly for a long time . That for small market , small manufacturer can be difficult to justify . Nearly all "hotrod" products are sold as "off road use only " what the buyer does after he gets the part is beyond the control of the manufacturer .

The reason for the post, is because Randy was asking if the supercharger kits were CARB legal. The point is that NONE of the aftermarket modifications are legal in CA. It is illegal in CA to modify your engine in *any* way other than the stock configuration. So why not ask Devek if their products are CARB legal? They aren't. Neither is the RMB, or any other popular modifications that people talk about... So why mention the supercharger kits? No engine mods are legal in CA... Anything you do has to be hidden from the inspection...

In fact, I am betting that Randy's convertible conversion may not be legal...
I'm sure when you drasticly modify the structure of a car, the govt. has to re-certify it as crashworthy, stable, roadworthy, etc...

A point that must be made is the difference between what is legal and what you can get away with easily.

What you can get away with easily is easy: anything that is not visually noteable or different from a stock looking and functioning engine bay, AND, those items are "invisible" do not increase emissions.

One huge advantage to stroker kits....nobody will ever know.....

I looked at the cost of cert'ing stroker kits, and actually started the process. But, the hoops you need to jump through are unreasonable. Not only emissions, but the mods must not increase emmissions over time due to engine wear increase over stock. I think the length of that time was around 5 years/100K miles???

I firmly believe in supporting the efforts to keep our environment clean, but it would be good to have a little slack cut once and awhile....maybesoon I will be able to run that 78....no holds barred.

I've said it before: All smog checks should be at the tailpipe only.

If it passes, it passes.

I agree, but we were talking "legal" here.
Hey, I'm the one with the very visable race only SC under the hood.
It's gonna be interesting in a year.
