Default 1988 S4 tire choices...are there really only 3

It seems for the 245/45/16 rears on a 1988 S4 we are down to 3 choices Toyo, Pirelli and maybe a Bridgestone. Anyone get tires recently and have any other sugestions?

I had just checked also, looking for tires for the Club Sports and I think Pirelli and Toyo are what’s available , with Pirelli probably better.

Pirelli at twice the price of the Toyo, kind of makes the argument for putting 17s on the car

I can get a full set of the Toyo Proxes T1r for $416 delivered. Anyone ever run these?

I keep thinking the smaller cars will grow wheel size up to 16, but seems not yet.

Three is pretty good. There were none available when I needed them in September 2014.

There were new ones on my GT when I bought it last April. I like them. Smooth ride. balance is good on D-90's. Was actually surprised.

I've never had the Toyo's, local friends do and no complaints. I've never been very impressed with Pirelli tires and would take the Toyo's even if they were the same price.

This-^

But, I’d take the Bridgestones if they are still available.

We can only get the Toyo's here in Oz, or the Michelin Pilot Sport, in the correct 16" sizes. I run the Toyo on my '87 and they're good.. not noisy, ride well, no issues spinning on wet roads when pulling away etc.

I think I'm going to get the Toyos, lots of good reviews and really can't beat $416. thanks for all the input

Yes. Had them on my 930 and they were very good. Not as good as Conti's though imo.

Ride is smooth, quiet as well. They do wear fast...but then that adds to the grip factor. I am on my second set!

On that note.....I'm going to "guess" the average 928 travels less than 3k miles per year. Performance tires should really be swapped out by the 6-7 year mark unless it really is a casual weekend driver / show car.

Point is, most of us will "wear out" tires due to age before tread. At least with the front tires

So buy those sticky ones with the 200 tread rating!!

With the clubsports I've had Bridgestone and the Toyo. Bridgestone has more grip and the ride was butter smooth. Current Toyos a bit rougher and less grip but last twice as long. I don't like the Toyo tread design but overall if that's the only choice I'll be okay with another set. Heard too many negatives about the rapid Pirelli wear and the 2x price to buy those.
