Might have found one...
I sold my 84 a little less than a year ago and wanted a newer version. Might have found it:
It's a white 88 S4, 77k miles 2 owner car. Original paint. Timing belt, radiator and new tires last month. Garage kept with high dollar sheepskin covers on the seats. No dash cracks at all. Price listed is 12K. The only thing I don't like is the chrome wheels. Problem is it's 200 miles from me. Looks like a road trip in the next couple of days.

Ed, I'm going to contact the shop that did the timing belt and get their take on the car. I think this shop did all the work when the car needed it so they should know the car. I should have more pictures tomorrow, the interior is black.

The car was listed on Facebook this week. Beware of the mileage for there's evidence that the triptometer may had broken with the dreaded "0000" shown on pics. If the interior is nice, proof of recent engine maintenance done with the proper parts (no cheap rebuilt water pump, etc), $12k is cheap and ****** it before it goes away.
The chrome wheels are the proper set (not the chrome part) for S4, 7" in front and 8" in back. Save these and get a set of Carrera III 18" for it. You'd thank me.
Here was my '89 auto before selling it.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

Hoi...the worst mistake of my "car life" is not taking your offer and trading my 84 for the one you sold. This is the one on Facebook and the seller confirmed that the odometer is intermittent. Hopefully the shop where it was serviced will have more info for me. Just like yours, I'm going to have to travel, just not nearly as far.

Becareful with this seller. The seller just posted on Craigslist (Houston, even if the car is in TN) and listing it for $19995 9 hours ago.

Hoi...The seller is a Lexus dealer who took the car in on a trade. An elderly lady traded 3 cars for a Lexus, this was one. I've been talking to one of the salesman. The salesman said his used car manager was wanting to list it everywhere so it's probably going to pop up in several places. The ODO is broken. I ran the carfax and the mileage was the same back in Sept when a service was done. Not sure how tomorrow is going to go with price and negotiation. Something that seemed odd though... the VIN is WP0JB092XJS860755. In other 928s I've seen, the X is usually a number. Is this something special?

According to the VIN, car is

If you aren't having a PPI done, at least ask the dealer to put it up on a lift. Bring a 10 inch ruler/straight edge with you and ask to pull off the flywheel cover and check for deflection of the flex plate. Of course look for leaks, particularly at the torque converter grate. At $12K the price (if unintentionally) is appropriate for a car that will need some work...but fixing ATF leak(s) at the TC is, as you probably know, a major task that invites even more WYIT items. Check the condition of the driver seat and the pedals and steering wheel. Look at the floor mat where the driver's heal would cause wear - these can tell you much about how far off the odometer is.
It looks fantastic for $12K. Good luck!

Good luck with the car. Sounds legit at $12k. Owned by an old woman, enough said.
