Default Any ideas - odd Steering Problem

The car has developed a steering problem, intermittently and only when turning to the right. Its as if the "power" part of the steering is gone when turning to the right. If I lock the wheel to the right and drive in a circle, the steering ease will return for hours, days, who knows. Then it becomes difficult again, any ideas?

Last summer I replaced the rack, boots, arms, there is no steering fluid on the engine, ground, etc, and a quick look around wheel well does not show anything unusual.

Really sounds like something internal to the rack.......nothing else that I can think of would cause the same symptoms. Fluid level OK with no air in the system? Was the whole system flushed with a new fluid reservoir when the rack was replaced? Maybe there is air getting in the system and the driving in circles gets it out for a short period of time only to return later. Start the car, remove the reservoir cap, and have someone turn the wheel from full left to right a few times and look for air bubbles coming back from the system in the reservoir.

George,

I had the same experience this year when I was driving to Frenzy7. The steering was fine turning left but at 90 degrees right the steering felt like it locked up, turn past it was OK and return to left from full right was OK.

It developed a real loud metal to metal screeching sound that weekend at that 90 degree point.

I had to replace the rack. I went with the Griffiths rack through 928Spec. I live in eastern PA and Griffiths is in western NJ. I was able to remove my rack and pick up the new rack at Griffiths.

While I was there, Charlie took my rack apart to see what the problem was and to make sure there wasn't any broken PS pump parts in the rack.

The bore that holds the pinion at the correct angle to the rack must have been off causing wear of the seals and binding when they wear, according to Charlie. You could see the wear marks and he said that about 20% of the 928 racks he rebuilds come in with this problem! He said that he could only salvage the actual rack from my core. This could be the probelm with your rack.

Where did you get the rack? Was it rebuilt or remanugactured? It seems rebuilt can mean anything from total remanufacture to clean and sell as rebuilt. There should be some kind of guarantee with the rack you bought.
