On the door opening roof line is this stamped feature - both driver and pax sides.

Some sort of alignment divot for the assembly process?

I always thought they were positioning indents for the roof rack.

It's for the roof rack as others have said. Same goes for the rubber plugs near the top of the hatch.

..., so what marks the positions for cars like pre s4 models that don' have these indents for roof rack fitment ?

The rubber plugs are covering up threaded inserts in the frame to physically hold the roof rack to the car.

I've never noticed those even when attaching the rack to my 87......
