I've been thru all this recently. Turns out it was the "Ignition Control Monitor relay. It's that clear box mounted next too the brains. You can make a Y jumper, from the center to the red & green, and red & yellow, sockets, for testing. A big thank you to Rob Edwards, he posted a picture of this 3 years ago. I put the jumper in the relay socket, and my car has continued to start, and run.

I'm waiting on a bypass relay from Roger. I'm not sure if you're car has this relay, but if it does, it might be you're problem.

Joe,

Glad you found the problem with your car. Whole lot of people missed you and Dee at Third Coast this last weekend.

FYI, the IMS was installed starting with 1989 cars.

I have not messed with tach connection yet...up to this point I can confirm spark....no fuel pump when cranking, but jumped it while cranking & got nothing...could not hear anything from injectors using a stethoscope...changed all relevant relays...removed the step-down relay...my relay list does not show an ignition control monitor relay.I'll take a look at the tach tomorrow.

My location is Bardstown, KY 40004 (502) 331-6030...located about 40 miles south of Louisville...in the heart of Bourbon Country....spent 38 1/2 years at Jim Beam...I'm dumber than a rock when it comes to electronic stuff but I know my whiskey !!.been retired for 21 yrs & hope to get this baby running again before I turn 81 next Sept!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! otherwise I will play with a '67 AH ....or....maybe I'll just have them bury me in the Porsche!!!

We missed being there too!

Just my luck! That is one thing IMHO, Porsche could have left out.

I'm gonna be doing the top end refresh soon. Then off to the paint shop. Now that I'm " RETIRED" I've got time for my projects.

Tom,

When did your car last run?
Did you clean grounds and swap relays due to an intermittent problem or for this no start condition?
When you swapped relays, did you first remove the battery ground strap before removing relays?
How many relays did you swap?
Where did you get the relays, that you swapped in?
Did you do them one at a time and comparing relay numbers?

Attached is a good relay chart from Alan Moore. The relay spots listed below should be empty;
III 3 - Listed as not used.
XXII 22 - This one should have a jumper bar going from the 9:00 to the 3:00 position.
XXVI 26 - Listed as not used.
XV 15 - This is the Kick-Down relay spot and should be empty.

no fuel pump when cranking, but jumped it while cranking & got nothing...could not hear anything from injectors using a stethoscope
I think your LH computer is not getting power or being allowed to turn on for some reason, missing ground or bad signal. If you LH does not turn on, then it will not be operating the injectors and your car will not start. No fuel.

my relay list does not show an ignition control monitor relay.
You won't see this on the relay chart and your car does not have one. That relay is located by the LH and EZK computers and was not added until '89.

See the attached relay chart and compare your relays to it. Verify the numbers and locations.

To do electrical testing, you would need some fabricated test leads to properly probe the LH and EZK connectors.
And of course a Volt / Ohm meter.

My 87 s4 won't start...ran fine this am but got in it just now & it cranks fine..has fire...won't hit a lick
Ken... above is my post from Oct. 24.....the next day it started & ran fine so I decided I'd clean the ground points & replace the relevant relays....BEFORE I cleaned the ground points & swapped out the relays it started fine...AFTER I finished...it started & ran fine...on Nov. 4, AM it started & ran fine..that same afternoon it cranked but would not run...I cleaned the ground points just as a routine mtnce thing I DID remove the battery strap before removing the relays I swapped 5 relays #'s:iv/xiv/xvi/xx/xxv....I got the relays from 928srus ....I did check that they were all the 53 type
What I cannot fathom is after I did cleaning & replacing it was fine & same day it is dead.

I think I can now fathom my stupidity...I pulled the ekz relay & should have left it alone...replaced it & engine started...thanks to everyone for your help & PLEASE don't hold my stupid mistake against me ...blame it on dementia! BUT if you are ever in Bardstown, KY I'll give you a drink of good bourbon!

Good news!
It's like the guys all said, always go back and look at what you "fixed" last
