Does anyone know stopping distances per year? I'm particularly interested in 1987 .....

Thanks Shane -- hmm those numbers don't look right, but I appreciate it, it's the only stopping distance number I've seen so far. I think I'll test my own :-)

I so hate this comparision. There ae so many things that you can do to a car to make them stop better. My 78 5 speed has been modified with WAY better rubber than back in 78. I have "S" brakes with Hawk Blue pads, and the car wieghs less now than stock. Stiffer springs better shocks. on and on. Road surface!!!!

I tested mine with a Gtech last summer. 60-0, 121 feet. 86 1/2 with GTS Big Reds and ABS. Probably could be better with more practice and staying out of the ABS.

FWIW, I had a Texas HP officer pull me over on one of my recent trips. He said he knows I was doing triple digits but his radar could not lock in due to the fact my car could slow down faster than his gun could process the changes.

He must have been a car guy, he smiled and asked me to please slow it down a little and sent me on my way.

"Officer, I couldn't have been doing anything over 200 MPH!"

I need to move to Texas. In Wa, they usually tell me did I know, 10pmh over can kill people, and 20mph over I can go to jail for life and lose my licence and forfeit my car.

Wow. I am amazed at the Road and Track numbers. Why would a 79 and 81 outperform an 84 and equal a 88 performance? Are the later cars that much heavier? The brakes on the S are supposed to be an upgrade for older cars. When I switched up to a set of 85 brakes, they were certainly beefier, and seem to stop faster, but I didn't measure the before and after.

Seems odd.

From Car and Driver May 1987, the S4 stopped 70-0 in 164ft.
From Car and Driver July 1990, the 928GT stops 70-0 in 167ft
From Car and Driver Jan 2004, the 2004 911 GT3 70-0 in 167ft

The great part was that the 928s were doing this on fifteen year old tire technology and the GT3 was on Pilot Sports. I wonder how my GT would do with GTS brakes and sticky 255 section front tires

Once again the 928 proves to be a car well ahead of its time

Heinrich, trust me I have gotten my share of tickets in the past!

One thing I learned a long time ago is never admit to anything, even in jest, when pulled over (cameras and microphones will get you)!

No proof, no ticket! Even if a ticket is given on a judgment call, without proof, most judges here will through it out.

Marc, the lbs did get added as the model evolved.

Just curious if these numbers mean anything, considering the variables...

...Just the other day my car took about 300 ft (+ or - 20 ft) to stop from 30 mph...downhill....on ice...and bald tires....and misaligned suspension.....and questionable operation of the ABS.

At least you didn't hid anything this time, Tarek! YOU FUNNY GUY, YOU KNOW! Get some new tires, please.

Did you find any bolts for the engine stand yet? I have been busy, sorry I have not come over.
