I know there is a big difference between insurance valuation and market values, but this jump in Hagerty valuations surprised me. Average value (based on Cat 3 condition) was just over $20K in May, and the just released September value is almost $28K. Really?? If so, I'm pulling my car off the market because it's doing better than my 401K over the same period!
Those seem to be the kinds of prices I am seeing, decent S4s in the mid 20K range. Seems like today anything that's 10-12K is rough and sometimes not driving.
This is a hilarious counterpoint to me selling my really nice 87 in 2004 for $4000. I couldn't give it away.
Good to know. I under-priced my car. Glad I still have it. I didn't expect another upward spike. I really thought the lines were going to remain flat...but I haven't been actively monitoring sales, auctions, etc..

I actually think Hagerty has been behind the trend on the 928, so I was not surprised to see their new data point Sept 1. There has been a strong renewed interest in these cars in collector circles that I think will continue to strengthen. Look at how many have been on BAT lately, and their "Why we love them" write up recently. Keep your cars and ride the trend.
Tough to say without sales data to back it up. Even then, variables galore.
But glad to hear you are keeping your car. I was out your way on my way back from SP WVA mid-week. Amazed at how the area had changed over the years since I was out that way...
Bertrand...it was last year! and it's getting embarrassing!! I don't want to sell it, but you are aware that I have some competing priorities in our special needs family...and a few times a year I begin to feel I don't have the time or resources for the 928. It's more of an internal guilt thing. My wife gets mad and won't talk to me if I say it's time to sell it! She turns it all around in a weirdly effective way..."Are we that much of a burden that you cannot keep the car!?" Uhh...no no no...I didn't mean it like that...sorry sorry....I promise I'll never mention selling the 928 again." She's right...and it's a pretty awesome statement, on several levels.
But seeing the latest values leap today provided strong incentive to keep it. The 928 has finally become an asset...not a time consuming (and fun!) money pit. As posted above, even fair cars are worth saving now. I certainly couldn't afford to buy my car today!!!

Diito everything Bertrand said. The car really is start to make economic sense. Why not hang onto it? If you do not have a lot of time for it now, and I fully understand why not, then chuck it away (properly) somewhere and forget about it for awhile. Someday you will want it and it may be too much $$$ to get into for a decent one, and yours is more than decent (well, except for one errant relay, but we all took care of that one late Sept night a couple of years ago in a parking lot)
Ed...of course you're right. The issue is how to put it in a semi-dormant state properly and allow myself to not feel compelled to steadily improve the car. Aside from some nose paint, overhauling the AC (works, but leaks), and getting ready for the top end refresh (it can probably wait a few years), I can't think of anything else it NEEDS (but I'm sure I could find plenty WANTS). I thought my trans would need to come out to fix an ATF leak, but I found the odd source - identified by Greg...and applied his Tre-Bond fix - and now it's bone dry. So no drips anywhere under the car (as of an hour ago ) I drive it weekly except over winter. I'll put a cover on it after Frenzy...out of sight out of mind (sure ).
Turned out there was no odd mysterious problem when it wouldn't start at the Fun Run rendezvous point. The battery was 8 years old and tired. Operator error. Put a gel battery in it and all has been good since.
