Default early exhaust

Thanks to a great guy on here who thought of me when he saw a stock exhaust system listed for sale, I now have a very good replacement for the aftermarket one that was on the car when I got it. Besides being a little loud, the old exhaust wasn't factory original - which is the overall goal for this car.

I'm getting a stock system off an '83. I guess the main differences are the material (stainless vs. not) and the hanger for the pumpkin, which will have to be modified slightly to fit my '78.

Questions:
- Does a Euro have a cat? If not, what did they use in its place?
- What was the finish of the '78 exhaust? Black? Natural metal? Does anyone have photos?
- What's the best way to refinish the one I'm getting?

Photos would be greatly appreciated! I know a few of you have refinished a stock exhaust system for an OB.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to ship it from New York to Chicago, so if anyone here is coming this way in a truck, let me know
If not, I'm going to incorporate a few cuts to reduce the overall length as it goes into a box.

A Euro may or may not have a cat depending on the country it was sold it.

They put another muffler in its place that was the same size as the cat, to cut down on costs most likely.

That exhaust has a 81+ cat on it, they work very well and last forever. And they were all painted black except for the cat as they get so hot.

The system is from a 1984 USA. I am going to try to ship it without cutting it up. If you had seen my post a month or so back, You would have gotten it free plus shipping! That someone should have told you about it then!

Lol! Thanks Walt! I didn't realize you were on here.

Free + shipping would have been even better, but as much trouble as I've had trying to find a clean, original system, I'm happy to put some extra lunch-money in your pocket!

"Fastenal" was suggested to me, as they ship store-to-store with their trucks. A lot of guys on HAMB have had very good experiences with shipping large & awkward parts with them. I got an estimate & it was VERY reasonable.

This car was delivered in Germany. A muffler in place of the cat? Wow, that's a lot of mufflers on that poor v8!

Great info! Thanks!

Get me the contact info and I will drive it over to them. What else do you need? I just went through a crate of parts and surprised myself with what I have.

You may find some helpful info in post #81. My pumpkin came off a 83 and I added the bracket in front of the muffler and drilled the two weld spots out on the rear bracket to accommodate the 78 sytle bracket

Man- I was watching that on Ebay for my car... Would've broken the bank on shipping though. Gotta keep my eyes peeled for another one.

Your new to you exhaust appears to be in superb condition. While standing next to Rob Edwards at last years Sharktoberfest, overheard him say (IIRC) 80+ systems came with the stainless steel pumpkin...much better. The hunt was on and purchased an 82 S/S exhaust system for Mokka from a fellow RL'r. Cut it in half lengthwise then shipped www.Busfreighter.com. Droo had it welded back together after receiving. Painted the pumpkin, etc, in black satin. Looks great. T
