Default Tyre Opinions

It's time to replace my 295/35ZR18 rear tyres. I currently have Bridgestone RE760 Sports, but would like to look at some other options. I don't drive much, and don't push the tyres, but do want good tyres.

I did see that the Toyo T1R is available in my size. It's an old design, but I liked them on a previous car.

Which are your current favourite tyres, and why?

I have had very good luck with the Hankook V12 EVO line, if you don't want to spend Michelin Money. I use them for DD 4 seasons year in NC ( so never really that cold) and as "wets" in the rain on track days. They don't come in the exact size you want, but they are available in :

275/40ZR18
285/35ZR18
295/30ZR18

According to The Tire Rack, if you are sticking with the same sizes, these are your options:

BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE760 SPORT - $714.24
CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 - $828.72
CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT SPORT - $853.00
TOYO PROXES 1 - $890.70
MICHELIN PILOT SUPER SPORT - $1,034.94
BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE050A - $1,219.00
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT PS2 - $1,299.34
BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE050A - $1,366.48

I have an odd philosophy when buying tires. IMO even the "worst" tire in whatever size you need is light-years better than what these cars had available when new. So I pick a tire that has high rating for wet weather driving.
Why? I figure in the dry they are all going to stick beyond the capabilities of our suspension. When it's wet, that is where you are going to wish you had the absolute best tires for conditions.

On that note, isn't 295/30-18 closer to the stock size in the rear? Couple more options with that setup:
SUMITOMO HTR Z III - $508.62
PIRELLI P ZERO ROSSO - $884.50
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT PS2 - $1,268.64
YOKOHAMA ADVAN A052 - $1,394.90
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT CUP 2 - $1,448.90
PIRELLI P ZERO TROFEO R - $1,518.64

Not sure what rims/offsets you are running, but here is what the calculator says about what you are running and the Hankooks:

Interesting that Tire Rack isn't showing any Hankook available in 295/30-18

Yeah, see it now. <doh> The good news is my calc figures should be pretty close.

As Hacker noted, you want 295 x 30 x 18.

With that said, you can't go wrong with Sumitomo HTR Z III's on the street. More performance than you'll ever use at a great price. Tire Rack has 295x30x18 for $300 a pair.

I agree with the logic for most, but I'm in California and would never drive in the wet.

I'm aware that the rolling radius is higher than it should be, but I have the sports suspension option, so am loathed to decrease the profile. I guess it depends on how stiff the sidewalls are though.

As per my signature, but with a custom spacer. I'd prefer stock, but it's too much hassle to change, and they do look good IMO.

Hypothetically, if I had dual nationality, in how much danger would the family jewels be ..

I think we'd give you a pass - unless that duality is something other than half Brit!

Yep, originally British.

I've ordered a pair of Bridgestone S-02A in 295/30ZR18. We'll see how my back likes the reduced sidewall height. It'll take a while for them to get here and for me to take the wheels off to get them fitted - I'm not letting a tyre place near the car.

Ignore the colonials.......I've got both tyres and tires on mine and it hasn't affected the handling a whit.
