All,
I have kids and I'm interested in upgrading from rear lapbelts in my 87 S4 to more recent 3-point style shoulder belts. I have read several threads (https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...threadid=41853) where some upgrades seem to be easier than others as some models have the threaded hole for the bolt under the rear quarter panel. I asked 928 International and they have some used belts they can sell me, but they indicated my model doesn't have the threaded hole.
Has anyone else had the same issue? Can I make my own hole or are there other mounting options?
Thanks in advance,

I am in the same situation so I will be watching this thread. I have an '87 and a kid and noticed on my friends' '89 GT and '91S4 that they have the shoulder belts. Both of their cars are tucked away for the winter so I can't compare thiers to mine. If no one else posts any info I'll bribe them with beer and try to get some photos of the differences. Thanks, Joel

For an 87 its a doddle (not sure which year the rear fittings were introduced on), I did this as my 91 is great for the kids, my wife was less than enthusiastic with the lap belts on the 87.
928intl will sell you all the parts needed for a reasonable price, I got mine from someone parting out an 89.
Need to remove the small rear side panel, can probably keep your original receptacles in the center. Feeling along the rear quarter (above the rear window) you should be able to feel a depression in where there is only fabric covering the panel, behind this is the thread for the bolt that holds the shoulder portion of the new belt.
Couple hours work.

Thanks everyone, for the replies.
Now I'm feeling completely stupid -- after Chris said he had the fitting on his '87, I felt compelled to spend some time feeling around for the fitting in the rear quarter panel, but I couldn't feel one. Either I'm looking in the wrong place, or my '87 simply doesn't have the fitting.
1. Does someone have a picture that shows where the fitting is, just so I know I'm looking in the right place?
2. Assuming for a minute that I DON'T have the fitting, anyone have any suggestions as to how I could attach the top of the shoulder belt? Alternate methods or how to create a usable fitting?
Thanks in advance,

Does this help ??
Again you will have a hole in the panel that is covered with the leather/vinyl and padding. Just need to cut a hole in the material but you should be able to feel a depression in the panel.

Hold the phone!! I re-read Chris's post and he indicated the fittings were ABOVE the rear window! Wow was I looking in the wrong place. Low and behold, I felt an area that feels like it could be the fitting!
I'll order the belts from 928 International and I'll post pictures of the procedure.
Thanks again Chris.

Mine is an 83, and to get through Oz inspection when I imported it, I needed rear shoulder belts, and show attachment points for child seats. The top rear point is in the pillar as in the pic above, and on the ledge right behind the seat back is a threaded hole for a child seat too, if you need it. I couldnt get lap-sash retracts that would fit was my only problem.

Hi all,
Well, Chuck sold me his belts for $45 and 928Intl sold me the bolts/washers I needed, so over the new year I was able to install. And, I'm anxious to do my first write up with the pictures I took. Truth is, just like the folks that provided responses indicated, there's really not much to it. The real work is removing the rear seats to get under the panel where the retractor is replaced.
That said, I still need help...
After all the hard work, the seatbelts are ready to go, but installing the rear child safety seat is a mystery to me. The retractor in most cars is at the top and child seats appear to be made to install with the retractor up top with the locking part of the belt at the bottom. But, the retractor for these rear seats is at the bottom so the bottom doesn't lock with a typical car seat. (I'm trying to use a Britax Roundabout Convertable in a Forward Facing Fashion.)
If anyone has used a car seat/booster seat in the rear using the shoulder belt, can you tell me what brand/model you used and how you installed it?
Greatly appeciated. Happy New Year!

on a somewhat related note
There are two bars that protrude from the rear seat area(one for each rear seat), there are between the rear seat bottom and the floor. My guess is they are anchor points for 4 pt belts?
