Default 78 Euro Vin# question

hi all,
i wanted to see if you guys could help me with a vin# I was looking at. It's a 5 speed 1978 with side markers behind the front wheels. I found this number on an old CA smog plate on the back of the drivers door. It is 92881021xx. It is not adding up to the info listed online. Thanks for your time.

Is it a non USA vin#? Could it have been imported later and kept its ROW vin#? Thanks again for anyone that has an idea.

That looks like the correct 10 digit number. Mine for example is
9288100622.

The 1 means it's a euro) instead of 2 for US), then the 0622 shows it's #622.

Yours would be #21xx.

I believe I'm correct but others may chime in

Thanks Kawi! I thought the 1978 all had vins under 1139? It also has mileage in kilometers.

I believe you may be thinking of US models when you mention those numbers, vins 1200 and below.

There is a ROW (Rest Of World/euro) vin # in the 928 oc registry a few hundred higher than yours. So, your number would definitely fall within the spectrum.

Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Brian.

Thanks Deputy! The car is in the US. I just wonder why it has a ROW vin instead of US. It was tough to find info on. Thanks!

Many Euro 928s got privately imported to the U S as used cars. The California smog tag would have been added as part of the "federalization process" .

James thank you! That answers a lot of questions I had. The vin # are in different spots than the Us ones.

Not much. If it needs that much work, then it won't be worth what you've put into it by the time you are done.

Is this the red one in Beverly Hills?
The one with the aftermarket front & rear bumpers?

Going rate depends on who wants it..on the average, between $250 and $ 2000

If it's passion, go for it. If your looking for investment, not a good idea.
