Look at the direction the lip(s) face. They need to expand slightly as the seal is fitted over the spindle. Bottom picture, please.

Hard to see that in the pictures. So, we'll go with your direction. 40 years of being a mechanic and putting my share of wheel seals...and I've never seen a seal go in number side first...leave it to the Germans...them making a person figure out the seal number from the inside...lol.

I think I've had the tools in my hands for at least that long, and fully understand what yiu are saying. But... The telltale is the direction that seal lips face.
