I've had 8"x18" (50 mm offset) front and rear on mine with 225 tires.
You should be fine at the back with up to 8" width. What will limit you at the front will be inside clearance to the springs. Smaller dia springs help here.

I seem to recall there was a service bulletin regarding the use of 17" wheels. If I remember correctly it specified that the spindles (stub axles) would need to be replaced for added strength required to support the additional leverage of larger wheels. I believe this applied to early to mid model run 944's, but since the 924S uses the early front spindles I would guess it applies to them as well.
Anybody else recall any details of this?
