i went to circuit city yesterday, and asked the guy if i could install an aftermarket radio/cd/mp3 player in my 87' 924s, and he said id' need to hard wire it. can someone please explain to me what this is, and if it is dificult to do. any tips or comments about your own personal installs would be greatly appreciated. the guy also told me that i couldnt replace the rear speakers and told me to just get a sub-woofer and id have good bass. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> is this true?all i want is good sound. thanks again guys for all the help

He means that you need to cut the wires and crimp/solder the new one in. It's not hard but you do need to take adequate precautions to wire the radio in correctly. In other words, make sure that you use good quality wire connectors and that no wires are exposed (no insulation covering). If you're worried about wether you can do it or not then pay the $20 to have it done.
As for the back speakers, I know in my 951 the rear windows need to be removed to get to them, a royal pain in the butt. You have a couple of options, put 6x9s in boxes in the rear and fish the wire under the seats. Put a sub in the back, but you'll probably need a amp for that. Buy some pre-amped subs like Bazooka's. If you go these "boxed" routes please make sure that you attach your boxes in the rear. You don't want them flying around if you get in a wreck.

There are wire harnesses available for your car but you will probably have to look around a bit to find it. I would not suggest that you try to hard wire it yourself if you are not very experienced with car stereo instals.
it is very possible to install new rear speakers however it is my experiance that the rear speakers are too close to your ears and they ruin the stereo imaging.
to get the best sound without major modifications to your interior you should just run the door speakers (a good new pair size 4x6m) and a sub (in the hatch area).
You probably would be better off going to a specialty stereo shop and have them perform any install instead of a large chain store like circit city.

Yeah, don't worry about getting in new rear speakers; I'd definitely agree that they're not helpful for imaging. Invest the money in a good head unit, wiring, and good front speakers, then fill in the low end
under the hatch as you can. I built a box (10" JBL or Infinity, I think) to fit in the tire well and added an amp (JBL also, IIRC), but it was a fair bit of work, you'd probably get just as good results with less custom stuff, though you might end up paying a little more. I love mid-bass, wish I had more, like another set of 6.5"s in the hatch, but lacking the motivation to really do it... if I really want to hear good music, I turn down the radio and spool up the turbo!
