Default I took the 914 out today....

I've had a 914 under an expensive (piece of crap) Cover King cover
for about two years now. It's got some electrical issues that the PO
just buggered together wires to get past rather then fix it, and it's got
the typical odds and ends that need work on, but she runs pretty well
as long as you don't need turn signals, headlights, horn, or wipers!!

Anywho, WOW! After driving my 924S for the past month, the 914 is...um....
well different!

Manual EVERYTHING! I LOVE that actually. When I pulled back into the
parking spot after taking out to fill up the tank with gas and some gas
antifreeze for storage, I shut off the engine and I'm like "Oh crap, I forgot
to roll up the window!" as I reach to turn the ignition back on...I sheepishly
reach over and I'm like "Oh Yeah" crank-crank-crank-crank Manual windows.

Was was more of a shock to me, was how everyone gawks at the 914.
Chicks were waving, guys were admiring her enviously, ricers were scared
because they had never seen anything like it before. Plus the Monza
exhaust didn't hurt much. At idle it sounds like a sick lawnmower, but
when I jump on it, with a roar and a chirp of the tires, all 79 horse power
and I'm off like a herd of startled turtles!

I don't get that kind of interest with my 924S. Hell, most people think it's
an old Datsun 280ZX!! (sigh)

Well I'm trying to confince a friend to store the 914 for me as my apartment
complex says they are gong to tow it away if I don't have the plates on
and properly registered and all that. I just can't afford that right now. (sigh)

I'm telling ya now, when I get a new job, I'm going to set aside some
money from each paycheck. Part to fix up the old 914, and part to save up
for a 951. I love these old P-cars...

hehe, sorry about the run-on sentences and spelling. I was just excited
and wanted to get this out before I ran out of steam.

Hehe, mine might be available by then, or sooner if I don't find a job!

Clunky but terribly fun little car.

thats cool, my neighbor had a PRISTINE 914 2.0 a while back, i drooled over that car every time i saw it, he had it set up for driving on the track, but for awhile he used it daily (you can do these things when you own the local pcar shop). it was silver with fuchs, man how i wish i could have bought that car, it was so cool.

maybe one day i'll own the second 'real' porsche.

Are 914s fun to drive compared to 944's, or are they just cool because they're rare? My brother has an old VW thing and he says its not fun to drive at all but its the only one in town!

the 914 is mid engined, and an extraordinary car when it comes to handling. alas, it was underpowered, but i'd imagine the centered weight made it a really fun car to drive.

-Michael- the rattles/noises and old school raw feeling were bonuses

Damnit, now I want to get back to working on mine. Thanks alot! It's bad enough that I have 3 project cars, but before this post I just kinda looked at the teener, now I'm wanting to work on the damn thing. Thanks. "No, honey, I'll get to putting the tile in the kitchen, I just want to mess with this for a minute. Boxes? What boxes? No, those aren't the new tile, no wait don't open that! They're not from Paragon, they're going back to Paragon. No they are NOT parts for the 914!"

Ahh, my first love . . . I've owned 5 of them. I'm glad I "cut" my wrenching "teeth" on them since they are comparitively inexpensive. Well, except for the 2.4L I built - that was expensive.

Ironically, I experienced the opposite feeling. I went from a '73 1.7 (my last "teener") to a '87 924S as a daily driver about 4 years ago. I FINALLY wasn't embarassed at gas stations from all the bodywork/primer, loud exhaust or, God forbid, push starting the thing because of the dreaded hot-start syndrome. The "S" was red, clean, air-conditioned and date-worthy. Sold my '73 just before I got married.

914's are terrific SECOND cars. They are like slot cars in the curves. With the right tires, they are not bad at all in the snow either (if riding at stock height). Driving one as a daily, unless it has been bathed in $$$, is a bit . . . bohemian. Also, arriving at passing lanes behind a string of SUV's/ minivans leaves you saying "Yeah, just wait until I get my . . . (insert any car w/ more than 100 hp)".

This stinks! Mine is/was my second p-car. I got it to make into a dedicated auto-x car, and about the time I was ready to spend $$ on putting it back together, we got pregnant. So, for the last 5 years the teener has been sitting. Now that the 944 mechanically "most of the way" I COULD start back on the teener. I may need to find a place to live though.

Not meaning to slam the 914, but some Porsche-know-nothing was under the impression that my 944S2 Cab was a 914!! So I had to "educate" him on his incorrectness

After building mine (factory flares, "mildly enhanced Euro 3.0, etc...) - I drive mine both on the street and track (mine is mostly track - so street driving is a bit - ummmm "hard" on the butt given the suspension, seat - and lack of "comforts") - but, they are terrific cars..! In fact - I was driving it a few days ago..!!!

Here it is (sorry for the picture quality - BUT I do think you can make out the 951 BEHIND me )

Took at ride at TWS in a 914 once. Coming off the bank and into the first turn the driver never lifted. Now since then I've come to find out that most cars don't need to lift there, but when your inches off the gound, with someone else driving, at 90+ mph, and you've never been on a race track before... man that seems fast! Can you say pucker power! Like a go kart on steroids!
