In an effort to decrease unnecessary weight off my car, I have decided to remove all the components of the sunroof. I successfully removed all the hardware and motor, but I am trying to figure out how I should seal the sunroof. The sunroof has a rubber trim and the car has a vinyl trim. I am afraid if I simply put glue in there I will have a failure at the track with the sunroof lifting off. Any suggestions on what to do to permanently seal it? Thank you.

Have it welded. I believe that is what most people do when they go that route. It's also safer.

you could also just go with the manual conversion. prolly lighter than welding.

Silicone seal will do it. The front clips could remain in place, they don't weigh much.

I would just go to manual, lighter than electrical but still functional.

you are right, it will lift off. Mine was broken when my brother had it, the gears stripped out. It would suck up on the highway, so he put double sided tape inbetween roof and car. The weatherstrip came off the roof though...

How do you weld a fiberglass panel to a steel roof? I guess you could have sheet steel welded in place of the sunroof panel. The electric sunroof panel, without hardware and liner, weighs 15.5lbs. The manual panel weighs 10.5lbs.

If you want to "glue" it down, 3M makes a caulking product for boats called 5200. If you stick that panel down with 5200, it likely will never come back out.

David, what we did on my CRX was take two strips of aluminum stock (looks like 7/8"x1/8"), place them about 6 or so inches in from the edges and pop rivet them to the roof panel and through the sunroof itself (pre bent them a bit to reflect the slight curve of the roof). I then caulked it around the rubber molding with the black 3M stuff. It holds at 131 mph w/ no issues and I don't believe it leaks (or doesn't leak badly). In the end its just the weight of the panel and gusset + the aluminum stock and 8 pop rivets.

Hey guys,
I have a somewhat related question...
I have a small leak in the rear right side of my electric sunroof...how can I fix this without replacing the seal, while still keeping it flush with the roof? i was thinking there's some caulking tha might work...

I had the same problem. I adjusted the amount the roof lowers and all. I tried adjusting the clutch to no avail, and then just converted it to a manual roof last weekend in about 30 minutes. There is really no way to seal it using caulking if you use it.

Don't silicone it down unless you want an untidy mess! PO did so on my car and it was a bear to get it back straight.

I'm curious about the leak problem. I have had two 944 that leaked and both were right hand rear. Is that common?
I worked Turtle Auto Wax paste into the joint. That seems to be working, but it will dry out and crack so it needs to be renewed occasionally. Also its real easy to get out when rainy season is over.
What is the manuel conversion? I haven't heard of it. Mine doesn't work anyway, so maybe a good solution to that problem.
