Looking for clean low mileage 951 / possible trade for 1971 Alfa GTV
I'm cross posting my post since I interestingly enough found a similar thread that I penned in 2005...but wanted to start a new one:
Here is my situation--I recently got a 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV as a fun runabout summer car, and have since had a newborn son, who cannot ride in the Alfa with me since the back seats are tiny at best and can't fit a car seat...so I'm thinking about moving the Alfa and getting a 951. So, now I'm looking for an S2 or a 951, but I think I'm leaning towards 951 just for fun appeal and it will not be an every day car, only a fairweather cruiser/fun tossable car, with rear seats and seatbelts. I'd like to stay even money or ideally less with my GTV so that I can have some cash to fix what may need fixing once I get the car.
Any thoughts or ideas on areas to particularly watch out for on the 951? I have read about the belts, waterpumps, and clutches needing attention.
Excited to get back into Pcar ownership after a lapse!

Thanks Voith--it's an amazing car. Prettier than a 356, almost as fun as an early 911, and Italian...it's very cool. I just think that I'll get more usage out of a 944 with one kid down and likely several others on the way...and I miss Porsche very much right now, especially as my Cayenne Turbo itch is not to be scratched anytime soon after an eyewatering Cat replacement on the S8...

Sweet Alfa, I love those!
I'd offer to trade you for my white '87 but I imagine I'd have to add a lot to of cash to get the Alfa. If you don't mind my asking, what ballpark value do you put on the car?
On 951s, some more things to keep in mind:
headers like to crack (they can be welded, as I did, or replaced)
hatch glass/frame separation
try to find one that hasn't been modded, or at least minimally modded
figure out which options you want (LSD, sport seats, etc)
If you like Fuchs wheels, only 1986s can mount them. '87 and later must use "late" offset.

Thanks for the tips @FRporscheman. I'm looking for $26K for the car--it's an honest driver not a garage queen but no rust and runs fantastic--just the way I like my cars -- I agree on the 'unmodded'/minimally modded principle. I don't mind the later wheels on these cars -- I think they look good with almost any Porsche wheel...sport seats and LSD would be nice but not sure how rare and I don't want to look for a unicorn!
