LED Rear Bulbs? German Halogen?
Hi,
I have followed some threads on here about people swapping out the rear BRAKE lights(all three??) with 30 or 35 watt German Halogen bulbs. How many people have done this and is there a heat problem with them?
I would also like to add a light to dead spot on the back of my car, IceShark do you offer anything for that? I have seen Performance products kits etc. Just wondering if there is high quality kit out there, or is that the only source?
I recently heard about LED bulbs that fit in the factory location, how do those look? I guess i am just looking for something a little brighter for brake lights in general...
Thanks -Erich

Someone posted that the LED's are actually not as bright as the standard bulbs. Iceshark can fill you in more.
I did the deadcell mod and find it to make the car much more visible. Last I heard Dan cleaned the market for the new parts so you may have to visit a salvage yard for the sockets.

Those LEDs will not put out the light anywhere near what standard incandescent bulbs do for brake lights. All you will see is a small red dot. All of the LEDs light is focused in one spot straight out from the connector. You'd have to make a whole cluster of LEDs on a circuit board to get a similar output that bulbs have. Also you'd want to get some very high out put LEDs.

It sounds like people really don't prefer the LED bulb setup. I agree that it seems like the light it very focused and not even as attention grabbing as the stock setup.
I'll go search on the halogen upgrade etc....
Thanks guys!

Yeah, LED retrofits like that bulb are a POS. They are not anywhere near as bright and since you are sticking them in a filament designed lens the light doesn't go anywhere close to where it should as LEDs typically have a pretty narrow beam range. I've tested some samples and it is pretty bad. Don't waste your money, you will be kicking yourself in the butt.
Scott is right, I cleaned out the entire North American market of the sockets except for two in New York. They are gone for good unless you get some used tail light backplates from the parts breakers and scavenge them.
But I can get some more 35 watt halogens if enough people want me to.

I appreciate all the input on the LED bulbs. Glad i didnt waste the money!

A local guy is giving me his cracked tail lights so I can scavenge the
sockets out of them.
Where can I get the 35 watt Halogens for my tails? Do they also fit
the reverse light too? I prefer really bright backup lights not only for
myself, but so the idiots that think parking lots are race ovals might
see me backing out before I see them zipping up on me at 45!!
sockets out of them.

Well, we went through this whole thing before in a prior thread The factory was forced to do a new build, so I can get them. If you want the German 35 watt halogen bulbs that just plug into standard sockets these are the bulbs you want. They will fit all the 1156 sockets, which you are interested in, no problem. they have the same base.
So send in checks for $6.75 by however many you want plus $5 in the USA.
NZ951, I can probably get them down to you pretty cheap on the shipping, depending on the weight. It should be pretty good if under a couple pounds.

Leonel,
No I don't have the 55watt H3s at the moment. But if there is enough interest in getting the 1156 35 watt halogens I can get a few 55 H3s tossed into the shipment for you.
I would like to have about 30 or 50 of the 1156 35 watters for a new order. So 10 guys buying from 2 to 6 bulbs. You can use them in the brake lights, reverse lights and the underhood courtesy light.

Well as long as they won't melt my lenses you can put me down for 6 of them or make that 8 so I can have a couple for spares and either 3 or 4 of the H3's.
