I was wondering what changes to the engine were made in 85.5 compared to the early years 83-85.1. I was told you could not swap a later engine to an early car but I was not sure ?

The '83-'85.1 (143hp) engines and the '85.5-'87 (150hp) engines are almost identical, IIRC the cam was the only real change. I believe the wiring harnesses and the DMEs are very different.

I'm not lookin to swap I just always like staying one step ahead of my car and I figure if the dreaded belt ever slips it would be good information to know.

slight change in Cam exhaust duration. Also covers were installed on balance shafts lobes in the engine for less windage.
AFM & DME system went to a different voltage. DME used a socketed main chip. AFM voltage pick-up (internal parts) is different.
Oh,
Changed to 5 blade fans vs 3 blade and think added two speeds vs 1 speed.
BTW... My race motor is combination of early and late parts
I had late moter in my 84 chassis for a while and now have an early block with late head and cam.
I have also run both early and late DME's on the car. They work fine as long as you use the right AFM to go with the DME.

You can swap the engines fine. There are minor revisions throughout the engine that are different but should be interchangable aside from the whole engine assy. being interchangable as well. Oil pressure relief valve, tensioners, oil galleries, rods, etc. have been "updated", but there's nothing wrong w/the old parts. There are tons of other stuff I didn't mention, but like has been said above, no big deal.
