When I first read your post, I assumed the entire car was running, not just the starter.

Suspect the wire but don't rule out a faulty electrical part of ignition switch. Hopefully your battery, alternator and starter survived and you just need a couple wires.

+1 on the shorted wire or a bad switch...if you have an issue with it and need to kill everything, undo the NEG post on the battery.

Sorry for the bump, I completely missed the second page of this thread.

I just received the replacement starter under warranty thankfully. I checked the small wire at the starter and it has constant voltage on it so it looks like you guys were right about it shorting out. I'm about to try the testing for the ignition switch from Clark's Garage. Is the only difference in the ignition switch between the early and late models, with the turbo using the same one? In case I need to order one.

Usually this is an issue with the wiring nearer to the starter and not something broken in the key switch.
