951 does not want to get in gear
My 1986 951 has been sitting for 6 months (due to other gremlins) and was recently started last month but could not get it into gear. Prior to that….no shifting issues.
Symptoms:
o When not running – its shifts through all gears.
o When running – it does not get into any gear.
- Both master, slave cylinder, and high pressure line were replaced last year.
- I replaced the blue hose that goes from the reservoir to the master cylinder this week.
- No visible leaks anywhere.
- I bled the brakes twice (I have a Power Bleeder)…though admit that the clutch is still notchy and not smooth.
- Checked underneath with someone pressing the clutch and through the inspection port on the clutch housing, I see the clutch slave cylinder piston move back and forth.
- Checked for clutch disk wear using the Clarks Garage method and it measure to spec (<34mm). It was about a width of my thumb at about 20mm.
Hypothesis:
- I have air still in the lines…due to the notchy feel of the clutch.
- Either the master or slave cylinders broke already after 1 year – Is this possible?
- Since there are no leaks…I may be sucking air somewhere.
Any thoughts here? Am I missing anything?

Yeah, I bet the clutch disk is rusted to the flywheel, as the others have said. I've had that happen to cars.
Just put your foot on the break, and start it up in 1st gear with your other foot on the clutch. It'll break free, then you'll be good to go.

Had that Same thing happen, Except it was a VW Scirocco I purchased it for super cheap, thought the clutch was bad... Rolled it onto a Trailer, Took it home.... Car was on Trailer backwards so I rolled off the trailer as it was running, shoved it in gear without clutch cause i wanted to see how it drove, ran around the yard and was coming to a stop but forgot the clutch didn't dis-engage, SLAMMED my foot on the brake and stalled the motor (Before I almost hit the barn) and PRESTO!!! I had a Clutch... Drove the car for another 80k and when I sold it, the clutch was STILL good.. I wish ALL Clutch re-furbs were that easy!!
