Personally I found removing the rear windows to be fairly easy if you have someone to catch it as you push it out. As you can see there was no need to remove the rear seat.

If your wondering why the new plates are blue, it's the only spray paint I had and you can't see them when installed.

Highway T, did that adapter plate come with the speakers or was it fabricated? I want to do something similar to my 924S.

Dal and Highway, thanks for the great photos. It sure will help when
I do mine!

I'm thinking about going 6 1/2" drivers in front and in back. These 4X6
and 6X9 things are a joke.

The car came with a factory adapter plate for the stock 4x6. I fabricated one for the 6.5" round speaker from steel sheet. I also glued foam on the rear to reduce vibration and used loctite on all the speaker fastners.

The longest part of the job was cutting an accurate cardboard template first.

FYI, I am not sure that the 924 body has the larger opening. I know for a fact that the early 944's did not have it.

Those are some nice adapter plates in the rear! I managed to find some rather nice 4x6" speakers made by MB Quart. Right now ive got them in the front and a subwoofer in the rear and it sounds pretty nice. Also, the method of prying out the vinyl is not really that bad, ive done it several times.

Yes, make your template for the new adapter plate out of cardboard first. It makes cutting the sheet metal much easier. Putting some sound deadener on the back side isn't a bad idea. I have one rattle that bugs me. It only happens at specific frequencies, I guess i'm gonna have to open the sides up again and fix that..... someday.

The cutout for the bigger speakers are only on 87 (or 88+) cars. My 86 only has the cutout for the 4x6 speakers in the back.

If there are 6x9's in your car, then it isn't a stock item, these cars never came with 6x9's.

The hifi option came with 10 speakers, all round. I can look up the sizes and part numbers if you want.

Good luck.
Dal.

I'll add my .02 saying the rear window removal was not as bad as I imagined.

Epic, if you have no sound going to either rear, it may be the wiring coming from the back of the head unit. I had no sound on my driver side, and after thinking I screwed up the wiring replacing the speaker(and taking it all apart again) turned out the wire leading to that speaker came unplugged behind the head unit. May be worth checking.

It's only the passenger side rear. I thought of that but I checked my wiring from the head unit and the amp. The problem is definitely after the amp, because I could plug the wire going to the right rear to the output for the right front and get nothing, but when the right front is plugged in it works fine.
