Default Extracting broken exhaust stud?

So, I'm about 99% sure my missing stud is missing because there is a stud broken off in the hole. I got a new stud and it would start threading then stop. So I stuck a nail in there, and it bottomed out about right flush with the head... anyone ever had any luck extracting one with the head on? I'm not wanting to pull the head right now just for that stud....

Test the theory on some scrap but some watchmaker forums concur. A slight amount of heat seems to be the key.

From my experience, extractors tend to break which makes things worse.
