Dear Scott: I don't know how good sliced bread is at removing the glue, but the 3M stuff is probably much better...perhaps if you toast the bread some....LOL!

What is the purpose of the hood liner? Keep the hood paint cool?
I did the same after a belt broke after running frayed for a while and whipping off the hood liner into bits and particles that I'm still finding and picking out to this day.
I haven't had a reason to need the liner and it's been a couple years. If anything the car's that much lighter

Try a cheap heat gun from harbor freight. I've used it on a number of things glued on it works pretty good.

As a purist, I have been trying to abstain, but thought I'd relate my recent experience with this task. Final result picture is in post #269 of the thread https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...bernation.html.
My pad was decomposing. Factory replacement pieces were sourced. Passenger side looked stock, but the driver side had a different foam pattern, slightly different color and a hole. By chance I checked a pad I had gotten for my MB 240D from Mercedessource.com, and it was almost exactly like the passenger side pad. I cut a piece and used contact cement to place it. Passenger side was self-adhesive. Used 3M adhesive remover to clean off the old sticky stuff. Very tedious.
