Default Oil pickup tube seal... a fun game for you!

I am in the midst of rebuilding my 88 944NA engine.

I would like to replace the gasket at the top of the pickup tube with a fresh one. The middle one here is the old one, and the rings on either side are the closest sized gaskets I could find that came in the Victor Reinz lower block gasket kit I bought.

Some of the gaskets in the kit are not necessarily for my car, or my model year. I know that. But does anyone know if the white one on the right is actually intended to replace the black ring on the oil pickup tube? If I don't get a positive answer, the old one is going back in, since it seems to be in fairly good shape anyway.

The black one on the left is too big. The white one looks like it'll fit nicely, though. It's a bit taller but it will definitely make a seal.

Who here knows what o-ring goes where?

I believe the clear one on the right is the one you're supposed to use. I didn't like the quality of that seal and got one from my the dealership. It was black like the one you took off. This is one critical seal that you don't want to mess with.

Yup, opaque one is the one they intend for you to use. I also went ahead and ordered an OEM one after reading about some concerns with the VR part. It was cheap enough.

I also did not use the Victor Reinz seal. I purchased one from 944Online for about 13 bucks. Interestingly enough, my original seal was actually orange, but the new black one from 944Online fit perfectly.

Yes the clear-ish seal is the one intended, but I used an oem.......Which seal/ o-ring is for the oil return tube? I'm also re building mine and in the same boat.

I've heard of people not even using a seal, but this is what the PET for the early 944 has:

If memory serves, the left-most seal in the OP picture is for the oil cooler so maybe the middle one is it?

The left most seal is for the oil cooler. I believe the oil return tube is a black o-ring. Just having a hard time identifying the VR kits seals as they aren't labeled and have extras. I think I'm going to post pictures and VR seal packs included in the kit so the kits are easier to sort. I'll start a new thread for it.

Thanks, that's a great idea. Half my stuff is already installed and I wish I'd thought to do that when I first broke into my kits.

I think you're right about the larger black ring being for the oil cooler... but because I'm converting to an external oil cooler, that one becomes an unused extra.

The middle ring in my picture is the original one that was in the car on the oil pickup tube.

I'm not using a seal for the return tube. I'm not sure why there would even be one? I don't recall there being one when I took it apart.

the external cooler still has a counter bore for that seal though it doesn't seal anything. Not sure if the factory used the seal there or not but I've taken apart two turbo engines that used it anyhow, see pic below

Does anyone know where I can buy the whiteish seal for the oil pick up tube? I bought part # 944.107.136.04, but that is actually the middle seal in the picture above and the outer diameter is too small for the girdle.

Thanks in advance!

Just curious what is wrong with the clear seal since that is what I have in my set, ready to install on a turbo engine. btw mahoney944 - your seal ID thread is great!

I have the same question. is there supposed to be a seal or crush washer under the return tube? there's no apparent sign that one is supposed to be there

For the pickup tube, my understanding is the clear seal does not meet Porsche spec, it fails and thus lose suction and engine pressure, leading to engine failure.
Lindsey Racing, Paragon Porsche, or Pelican Parts has the direct OEM part, maybe Porsche.

For the return tube, no crush washer or seal is needed, metal to metal contact.

The return tube actually uses a very thin o ring. I bought an OE o ring but decided against using it. I figured it would fall out like the original.

The clear seal is the durometer equivalent of a gummy bear. - junk. No engine builder that I know of uses it.
they are $8.65 each. I just ordered 3 from Germanautoparts. Com
