Unhappy I think I need motor mounts....

My car is vibrating my teeth out at idle. When I bought the car just a few
weeks ago, I noticed this, and it was very slight...I figured it was an
idle adjustment of some sort and didn't worry about it till I could get
some time under the hood. Not that being under the hood means much,
I don't have much of a place to work on the car, nor any experience
further then oil changes and an alternator or two on much more simpler
cars.

Anywho, the past few days the cars idle is getting to where it's rattling
the wheel, the exhaust, and my teeth. It's not as bad after the car warms
up, which made me think adjustment, but it's still there and getting worse.

After doing some reading up, and paging through the Haynes a dozen
or so times, I'm thinking this is motor mounts.

First off, what else could it be?

Secondly, assuming it is motor mounts, any guides to doing this, WITH
PHOTOS?

Thirdly, I know the belts and water pump were done this spring on this
car, but "while I'm under there", is there anything else I should be hitting?

Having recently been laid off, I'm on a tight budget, really tight. So this
means scrounging for the parts, and doing the work myself in my parents
cold garage. Hell, I'm not even sure they have metric tools...I might have
to buy some! So the reason I ask for any guides with photos, is because
most of the guides and the Haynes manual itself tell you to remove bolts
from stuff, but hell if I know EXACTLY what the guides are talking about.

Hopefully they will make more sense once I'm under the car, but if it's
telling me to remove stuff from something and I have no idea what that
something looks like...sure makes for a long night under the car....

Any and all help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Have you checked the tech session article on Paragon? They give you a pretty good idea of what bad motor mounts will be like....

Taken from the article
Excessive vibration when starting or stopping the engine

Excessive vibration at idle (even when warm, assuming the problem is not with the engine itself)

Try pulling down on the engine using the header for leverage. It should move a small amount (2-4mm)

Cracks or splitting in the rubber, or noticeable leaks of the damping fluid.

You can actually measure the motor mount to find out if it's collapsed. Measured from upper to lower mounting surface... New they are 70mm +/- 1mm, anything less than 62mm installed, or 65mm not installed should be considered failed.

Their is also a detailed writeup on what needs to be done...although no pictures are provided.

I haven't been able to get under the car yet to measure them, and
that's the article that helped narrow down what the issue seemed to be.

I've printed it out, and I'm going to get under the car ASAP and see if I
can measure/examine the motor mounts and see how ugly they are.
I might have a chance to get a used (updated) pair from a reputable
shop for about $70, but I'm keeping my options open.

I'm rather hoping that this will help me get over my fear of working on the
car. I've got no guidence, no help, and no back-up besides running here
to Rennlist and asking questions.

You guys (and gals) are great by the way!

To be honest, i would advise against a used pair of motor mounts. Thats sorta like putting on dirty underwear after you take a shower (something my old boss would say all the time if we mop the floor without spraying the mop out first). If your gonna go through the trouble of doing this job, id just go for a new pair of mounts. But again i understand your on a budget, just my .02 cents.

Oh man, I totally agree. For all I know I might get 300 miles on those
used ones then, POP. Well, not like that but you get the point it's more
like (insert quiet leak and engine rattle here).

New ones are about $150 a pair, so I'm going to see if I can afford that.
