Default Thinking of buying a 1987 924s

I am thinking about buying a 1987 924s that is for sale around the block from me.

I would love your thoughts.

The current asking price is $4800.00

I took it to my mechanic who is a Porsche Enthusiast. He said the following...

Th clutch feels like it is in good shape.
It runs terrific. And has roughly 75,000 miles.

A couple of small tears in the dash.
A few nicks in the paint.
Has some oil seepage in two spots. One is the Oil Pressure Sending Unit
A small fuel leak in the rear.
Will need a break service flush.
And, the sway bar bushings will need to be replaced.

I'm not an expert on the 924S compared to the 944, so forgive me if I am way off base. The 944 had a metal fuel tank in the early years that is prone to rusting out and leaking. If it leaks, you either have to try to find a good used one or do some cutting/fabbing to fit a late (85.5+ 944) plastic tank. It looks like a good amount of work.

If you've got a fuel leak in the back I'd be pretty concerned that I'd be looking at a fuel tank replacement, so factor that in.

Oil pressure sending unit should be easy enough to re-seal. Where is the other oil leak spot?

Also figure on a timing belt replacement early if you don't know when the last time it was done was.

Price seems a tad high, but I can't see the car in person and it is a low mileage car.

The other leak was over the coolant belt so it would probably need replacing as well.

Both the timing belt and water pump have both been replaced this year.

Oh, the oil leak in the back was around a hose of some kind. It wasn't directly related to the tank.

It was on something my mechanic said we would need to fix. It looked like a little silver cup. Sorry, I'm not well educated on this. He didn't suggest it would be that difficult. He is a mechanic I have used for a long time. I trust them quite a bit.

The only things I can think of that would resemble a little silver cup would be the fuel filter or the small protrusion at the bottom of the fuel tank.

If the fuel is leaking from the connections at the filter, then yeah, its probably a simple fix. If its leaking from the tank then its not a small job. Your mechanic has seen the car, I haven't, I'm just telling you that replacing the fuel tank on a 944 isn't the easiest job if it happens to be that. Hopefully its not.

The fuel tank is metal and is prone to cracks on the top of the tank. Normally the tank can be repaired... but the transmission has to be dropped. Not a huge job and a good project to get your hands dirty on a 924S. Sounds like a solid car but price seems a bit high to me also.

With the timing belt and water pump changed and if the clutch has been done fairly recently that's a good beginning. If the rest of the car is in good shape... and if it is really 75,000 miles the price might not be too bad seen from afar. If the fuel leak is the tank than I'd offer $4000. I paid $3000 for mine 6 years ago and the timing belt, water pump, clutch, tank repair, brake parts, steering rack kit, fuel pump etc. have brought that up to a bit more than $6000. It's a solid (but oil leaking) ride now. I do all my own work, except the patching of the fuel tank.

If the car is clean and stock, I think 4k is a fair offer for a 75k 924S. Prices are coming up. Some low mileage early 924's have brought surprising money over on BAT auctions and 944's seem to be following suit. Given not many 924's were made in 87-88, and they have suffered a high attrition rate, it might be a good time to buy.

I've owned my '87 924S for over 20 years. It is still a daily driver.
If the car actually has 75K and not a bad odometer, check to see if the clutch has the rubber clutch disc.

It may never have been changed and if rubber, it is bound to break apart soon. Basic DIY even for a new owner but a shop will charge a couple of thousand +- and more for a few WYAIT items.

If you have basic skills go for it!

Oh and the seller admitted that the odometer is broken and works only about 50% of the time. But he said he hardly drove it in Chicago and that he believes the correct mileage is around 75k.

Funny, that doesn't look like Chicago. Is he in the suburbs?

I'm biased towards the 944T, but that car looks nice!! Good find. Since odo is not working see if he'll negotiate a bit with you. I'd be in that car for $4K.
